“One funny thing I find on Eastenders is that whenever...”

written by on 03/04/2009

Good Points
-When the dramatic sadness is pulled off correctly and it proves to be an interesting storyline.

Bad Points
-There can be too much sadness and depression most of the time, and it sometimes feels like a chore to watch as a result.
-There have been some horrendous examples of bad acting, most of the time cringe worthy dialogue and in one particular example, the recent scene of a certain character getting run over; it looked like a poorly acted action scene, and really failed to capture the essence of the hit. You could practically tell she was jumping into the car.
-The cliffhanger moments. One at the end is okay, however, at the end of every scene there is a saddening cliffhanger usually ending with 'I am your father', 'I am your sister.' 'I love you.' 'I am a transvestite' and 'I am a bad actor!'. It is too frequent and I believe they should be cut down to perhaps one or two an episode, because by the end of the episode you just get used to it.

General Comments
One funny thing I find on Eastenders is that whenever something happy happens there's always something sad that happens to quickly erase it, and then another sad thing...and another...and another. The problem is that the producers have the misconception that 'darkness sells'-in that they believe that by making the storylines horrifically depressing more people are going to watch it. I guess that this misconception has proved to be correct however, judging by some viewing figures.

However, it does not mean that the drama is very good. The fact is that EastEnders is one of the most depressing soaps around; someone helps another person it's for a darker reason than just wanting to help and the plot focuses on a couple episodes on the aforementioned 'darker reason'.

Generally the plot focus is sadness and tragedy, and while sometimes it can pull off to make a good, entertaining and interesting storyline, most of the time we get too depressed by just thinking about the plot, and turn over to a happier program.

A recommendation I'd give Eastenders is to pull off on the sad tragedies and focus on some more happy times; nearly every moment in Eastenders seems to be a horribly depressing cliffhanger that makes someone cry.

Overall, I don't think it's fair to give this a ridiculously low score; as, however inconsistent it is, the show does produce some gems in terms of storylines, and sometimes it can prove good, however, I still give it a low score of three out of ten, citing over-saturation of depressing and sad storylines, and for the most part generally bad acting and too many cliffhanger moments that cause the 'big' finale cliffhanger moment losing it's dramatic effect and thus leaving viewers uninterested in watching the resolution.
