“Poor service”

written by Catsdad1 on 06/03/2016

Hired a couple of times from the Croydon branch of Enterprise and found it satisfactory.
However, was moving friends of mine from Croydon to Manchester and needed a small van.
The hire process was straightforward on the website and I took out the relevant insurances to reduce any excesses.

When I turned up on the day of the booking, the counter staff were telling me that the insurances I took out on the website were not valid and I would have to pay again at a higher price. After a bit of to and fro, they agreed the website was right and I didn't have to pay anything else.

So, the vehicle; a Nissan. Seemed OK at first and after the 'walk round', I was left to my own devices.
Now, I have been driving for thirty years and have driven everything that doesn't pivot, some of that professionally. Latterly, my professional driving is done on metal and privately in a Volvo auto estate.

When I got in this van and initially on moving off, I managed to knee myself in the jaw with my clutch foot. "That's biting high" I thought, but then, having not driven a manual for a while, I kinda put it down to my recent inexperience. Fool.

So, I potter around in the van for a day, getting more concerned by the high clutch, but thinking that as a hire, it's probably more me that the van. Load the van up, light load - couple of hundredweight at most - and head off to Manchester.
On my way up, I notice a bit of clutch slip. Park the van for the night after 270 motorway miles and become really concerned about the smell of clutch from the van.

Potter round Manchester next day and finally get on the motorway empty and back home. I stop at Bletchley for a sandwich and on re-joining the motorway at about 60 mph, the clutch goes big time.
I will now skip the horror of being stranded on the side of the motorway in January for three hours.

I get towed to Oxford Enterprise who are aware I'm coming, are full of apologies and they give me a Vauxhall car to get back home.
Whilst I'm at Oxford Enterprise, I get a call from Croydon Enterprise who want to know where I am because they would like to go home and I'm late returning the van. I bite my tongue, tell them the story that I assumed central customer services would've already told them and get unceremoniously hung up on.

I get home at 22:00 hours - four hours later that I had expected to. I return the car to the Croydon branch next morning with meaningless platitudes of - 'very sorry', 'the manager will be in touch before the days out'.

I'm still waiting for that phone call, but I'm not bothered because I'd no sooner rent from Enterprise again than I would poke one of my own eyes out.
