“COMPLETE AMATEURS WITH POOR MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE OR...”

written by Spencerfw347 on 21/10/2015

bought a new bike. on collection brake callipers were leaning to one side. thought i'd check it all when i got home. the callipers were leaning because both wheels were 1cm closere to the chainstay tube than on the other side. also one brake shoe was touching the tyre - DANGEROUS and one brake shoe was only half touching the rim (uneven wear on brake shoe and rim) front wheel quick release was loose - touched it and it fell open. no bell fitted (a legal requirement) no manufactures manual. adjusted bike myself but took it back to have wheels trued as to me it looked like the entire wheels needed to be adjusted on one side to pull the wheels back over. on collection of the bike they said it was fine and they'd trued it but it wasn't to bad. here's the education bit. when you true a wheel in a truing stand you then fit the wheel and check it in the frame to make sure its central. if not this would imply a problem with the frame or wheel hub. the mechanic said your brake are an even distance from the wheel to which i replied yes but the wheel is still leaning and therefore so are the brakes. i asked the assistant manager and he agreed. i also mentioned the set up of the bike and the lack of a manual to which he replied we probably just ran out. i asked him did he not think that was relevant to mention when i paid the £700? in the end one thing swung me towards a full refund; at no point did i here the word SORRY. i was made to feel like i was overreacting. i did not swear or raise my voice yet they acted like i was being unreasonable. i have 3 used bikes at present and have over 20,000 miles of cycling experience. i service my bikes myself. ALL MY WHEELS ARE STRAIGHT AND CENTRAL AND I'M NOT A MECHANIC! I WILL NEVER, EVER, EMPHATICALLY, CATEGORICALLY USE EVANS CYCLES AGAIN. the best thing about their shop is the exit door!
