“Great venue, TERRIBLE management! AVOID!!”

Written on: 25/09/2015

At Boreham House “Everything is Possible”, at least until you pay the deposit!! Similar to another 1* review here, we were drawn in by the rhetoric from the person I dealt with which made out that the venue was perfect for our wedding. However soon after paying the deposit we discovered that this was not the case. Hopefully my review will help other couples to avoid making the same mistake we did by booking Boreham House for their special day as the management of the venue really did spoil the lead up to our wedding. For reference, we booked Boreham House for the entire day on an exclusive use and dry hire basis over the August Bank Holiday 2015.

"Everything is Possible!”….except…

We wanted to have fireworks in the expansive grounds behind the House but this was not allowed. We could only have it at the front of the house and even then, we had to use a specific local supplier who’s prices would best be described as ‘extortionate’.

Despite the hire being on an exclusive use basis of the whole venue, you in fact only get to use parts of it at certain times. The main House is locked once all the guests have passed through to the back garden and pavilion and when it comes time to leave everyone is made to walk around the side of the house back to the front, regardless of the time. The reason we were given for this is because they "can’t just have people walking around the house”. For the amount of money that they charge and on the basis that we have exclusive use of the venue for the whole day this was unacceptable. We had use of the House itself for only a couple of hours in the whole day! Again, this isn’t something you are told before paying the deposit and is not something included in the terms of the contract.

Your deposit is very readily accepted via credit card but the remaining balance which is over 90% of the total must be paid by direct debit. This is not something you are told about when you make your booking and pay the deposit or are even given any advance warning of. Boreham House simply expect you to have this amount of money sitting around ready to be paid!

"Everything is included in the price!”….except….

Prior to paying our deposit, the Bridal Cottage was included in the price. Both my wife and I and my parents all heard the words come from her mouth. Yet after paying the deposit and receiving the contract we found that the Bridal Cottage was actually only available to us at an additional charge of £150!

There is a beautiful piano in the front foyer which can only be played by Boreham House’s own pianist. Of course if we wish to have this ‘perk’ you have to pay extra and book well in advance. IF you decide not to book the pianist then the piano remains in the foyer and stays covered by an ugly cover throughout your beautiful day. There is no consideration that the couple might want a nice backdrop to their photos in the House that they have paid so much for!

You can have flowers inside the house but they must be provided by their own approved florist. As with the fireworks, the prices from the florist are ‘extortionate’! Our own decorator could have provided flower arrangements for a fraction of the cost but this was not allowed. They do give you the option of hiring their fake flower arrangements for which privilege you pay £150 and have to book 6 weeks in advance as they are ordered especially for the event. It is quite odd then that on every occasion we visited Boreham House we saw the same flowers displayed in the House and on our wedding day, lo and behold, the same arrangements were being displayed! Boreham House are essentially charging you £150 for them not removing the fake flowers that are set about the House on your wedding day.

Boreham House has two dedicated function rooms, each with it’s own kitchen. When we first went to view the venue we were shown both and even told in detail how one in particular had been extensively refurbished. However, much later when we visited again with our caterer we were told that we could not have use of both kitchens, even though we were planning to be serving food in both function rooms(lunch and dinner). There was nothing at all in the contract we had signed pertaining to this restriction in use of the kitchens. When asked the reason for this, we were told it was because Boreham House did not want to have to clean two kitchens after the event. This was despite our caterer making it clear that their own policy was to clean all rooms and to get sign off from the venue before they left for the night. One of the absolute lows of our experience with Boreham House was when she exclaimed to my caterer, whilst I was there, that “You are all the same! We give you a little bit and you take advantage and we have rice and curry everywhere!”. Absolutely unbelievable and extremely racist. Both my caterer and I were stunned into silence. It has been a very long time indeed since I have experienced such incredibly small minded and rude behaviour and blatant racism!

There’s unprofessionalism and there’s….

During the visit to Boreham House with our caterer, she was under the mistaken impression that I was the caterer and the tone that she took with me caused me great worry. The point at which she realised her mistake her tone changed completely. This was as clear an illustration as I could have asked for as to how she runs her business and deals with suppliers. It was following this that she moved onto her racist exclamations!

Due to my wife’s profession (ballet dancer) we were planning on having a few dancing orientated photos being taken during out wedding day. At the time of booking, we offered her the opportunity to use any photos we took for marketing purposes in exchange for a discounted hire charge. This was flatly refused. What a surprise it was then that a few days after our wedding to see that they had not only stolen one of our photographs from Facebook that our photographer had posted, but also edited it and posted it to their own business page as an advert for their own open day. We and our photographer wrote to them multiple times asking them to remove the photo but were met with absolute unprofessionalism and rudeness.

As we were already committed to holding our wedding at Boreham House we had no choice but to keep going with our planning of our special day. We were fearful of what Boreham House would do if we pushed too hard on the points above but hopefully this review will go some way in warning any future couples off Boreham House. It is a shame as the venue is beautiful if not lacking some proper maintenance. The staff on the day were great and the Head Chef is fantastic. But the rest of the management team are absolutely amateur and hugely unprofessional.
