“I stayed in Devon Cliffs for a long weekend back in...”

Written on: 15/09/2010 by MarionE (8 reviews written)

I stayed in Devon Cliffs for a long weekend back in April but have only just found this site to review it.

All I can say is - go here at your peril! I've stayed in many caravan sites in the last few years and this is the worst, I wouldn't come back here if they paid me!

In the first couple of minutes of unloading our suitcases we found a few dozen ants around the living area before we tracked down the source to the pipes under the kitchen sinks - "infestation" is too mild a word for what we found - there must have been hundreds of ants under there. I immediately found some young members of staff who I suspect had seen this many times before. They immediately offered to get ant powder for us but I had to push them to visit the caravan first to assess how bad it was. When they had looked they agreed it was bad and as I had two young children (one and two years old at the time) it wasn't possible to leave ant powder down permanently. They tried to move us but they were fully booked that weekend so eventually they put ant powder down then came back after half an hour to hoover it up. This obviously only killed the ants that were there and didn't remove the actual nest which must have been under the van - we therefore had ants coming up the pipes the whole time we were there. They were all over the place, to the extent that when I'd unpacked our suitcases at home I found half a dozen ants hiding underneath the case that had hitched a ride back with us.

Leaving the ant problem aside the van was pretty sub-standard - there was rubbish from the previous occupants in every single cupboard and drawer so it obviously hadn't been cleaned very well, if at all. There were bits of trim hanging off woodwork in the kitchen which wouldn't have bothered me in a standard van but we'd paid extra to upgrade. There was no toaster which I find quite amazing in this day and age. This would have been less of a problem if the wire grill tray had fitted the grill pan correctly but using it turned out to be a balancing act that was totally beyond me. Don't try cooking sausages under the grill, from experience you will end up getting splashed with hot fat when the grill tray collapses on one side.

The boiler is also not up to the job, the shower was cool at best. My husband prefers quite a cool shower and it was too cold even for him.

I did complain via the customer satisfaction sheet but didn't get any response beyond a standard "sorry you weren't happy" letter.

Last but not least - if you do stay here don't risk getting pizza from the takeaway restaurant section - ours came with added pubic hair.

It's such a shame as the other facilities on the park are brilliant, especially if you have young children. I took my kids to the daytime entertainment and although there was hard-selling of photos etc. it was very good quality and my kids enjoyed it. They have a lot of unusual activities available on site for extra cost and if your budget's not limited your kids would probably love it here. As a previous poster mentioned, both the club houses are very crowded but again the entertainment is geared towards young children and is generally enjoyable. It's such a gutter that they spoilt their multi million pound refit by not spending a few extra quid on toasters and pest conrol.
