“This camera is a follow-up to the 990z, but has been...”

Written on: 20/07/2001 by Nic Chilton. (1 review written)

Good Points
A good ISO range (100,200,400)
Good picture quality
Excellent battery life

Bad Points
Tripod mount too far over - all weight hangs off the tripod
Lens switch - not so much a bad feature but on first time use it is not apparent that after opening the lens cover you have to open it a bit further "until it clicks" to switch on the camera.

General Comments
This camera is a follow-up to the 990z, but has been redesigned to have a more competitive price cost (e.g. against the Fuji 2400z). So gone are elements like the top LCD panel displaying shots left, but there's plenty of features for the price.

I was contemplating buying a Fuji 2400z before this camera came out. It costs a little bit more than the 2400z (but a lot less than the Olympus 990z) for which you get TV out connection, night mode shooting (with fairly good low-light shots as the camera goes to ISO400 and 1/2 sec shutter), and excellent battery life. The camera is slightly shorter and thicker than the fuji 2400z but fits well in one hand utilising the grip built in on the right hand side). Leaving the camera on (without LCD displayed) hardly consumes any power at all! The battery consumption in all areas (e.g. with LCD on, shooting,..) are all far lower than those of the 2400z. I filled a 128MB SM card in about 3 days, with many uses of the flash (2/3 of the photo's or there abouts) and reviews using the LCD all on a single set of batteries.

A good camera, and considering internetcamerasdirect threw in an additional 16MB SM card, good value for money.
