We hired from National Car and five days into the hire period they called us and told us the car had to be exchanged because it needed "a service". Why they let us a car that needed to be returned a few days later for a service we have no idea.
They swapped the car for another one which appeared to be a lower spec. model and when we got the bill at the end of the hire we found we were charged 40 pounds extra for fuel despite having returned the car full.
After a long complaints procedure lasting two months during which they refused to admit any error we eventually got half our money back. National Car said the charge was for missing fuel on the first car and charged us for the missing fuel at double the rate.
Effectively they took our car off us and charged us for doing so at the same time. We had no evidence we had filled up the first car with fuel because we had no reason to keep petrol receipts for halfway through the hire.
We were also given the wrong information about when the car had to be returned by three times on three separate hires despite having asked again each time to double check. We'll never use them again.
