“A good entry-level loudspeaker for somebody who is...”

written by kepla on 30/09/2007

Good Points
The Ninkas have pretty decent sound quality - quite similar to the old Kelidhs which they replace in the Linn range. Of course they look great but it is the sound quality which matters. For the price there is really nothing on the market to touch them - provided you are feeding them with a good quality source which has been accurately amplified. Obviously going the Aktiv route makes an improvement and, when aktivated, they are only a step or two down from the performance of the old Kabers which sold for more than twice the price. For reference, my yardstick is the old Linn Keltiks which of course sound much better - but at a price!

Bad Points
You only pay a grand for these, so you only get a grand's worth of sound quality - and if they are not properly installed you won't even approach that. You cannot hook these onto the end of cheap other system components and expect anything magical to happen - they will just end up showing the deficiencies in the rest of the system.
They are a little small to have really deep bass-end clout but, like the Kelidhs before them, give a reasonable impression of what the bass instruments are up to.

General Comments
A good entry-level loudspeaker for somebody who is building a Linn system and is a bit constrained budget-wise to begin with. They don't cost a fortune by any means, but you get to experience the accuracy of the 'Linn sound' provided they are properly installed and hooked-up to a decent system. They can be upgraded with bi-wiring, bi-amping and then fully aktiv as time and budget allows - so they are a good place for a 'Linn virgin' to get their initiation!
