“I was introduced to the Job Hunter's Workshop Manual...”

written by Sue Heselton on 05/03/2004

Good Points
Practical, no nonsense, and highly useful advice on all aspects of job hunting. Excellent CV examples and great section on interview technique.

Bad Points
None really but I prefer to read from paper and not a computer screen.

General Comments
I was introduced to the Job Hunter's Workshop Manual while surfing job sites. An advertising banner took me to www.jobhunting.uk.com which gave a synopsis of the book and instructions on how to buy it. The book was supplied on a CD ROM (as a PDF file) and cost £7.95 including postage and packing. It arrived within three days.

I have read several books on the subject of job hunting but I felt they all had a theoretical air about them - great for the classroom but not much good for real life. 'The Job Hunter's Workshop Manual' read more like 'top quality' lecture notes and it soon became clear that its author had experienced, first hand, every subject covered.

These included such topics as handling redundancy, self analysis, meaningful CV writing, planning, digging out job opportunities in the 'unadvertised market', making speculative approaches and much, much more. My weakest skills, however, were in the area of interview technique and the manual's section on this was most helpful. It guided me through the entire interview process as if I was actually there, and gave many examples of tough interview questions with suggested ways of answering them. It also helped me construct a few of my own! The section on role-play was also very powerful and I am grateful to my close friend for playing her part of the interviewer!

The manual comprises 140 pages (in A5 format) with around 26,000 words. I preferred to read it from the printed page and so I made up a book - but that's just me.

I attended several interviews (PA secretary) and made a good job of every interview, thanks to the manual. I received three job offers and, at the time of writing, I am still deciding which one to accept!
