“Bad basic premise”

written by 233Fisher on 18/11/2014

I try not to be a crank, buy the new Yahoo mail is a good example of a complex interface system that fails at all levels. I've taught human factors in interface design at West Point and Johns Hopkins, and the new Yahoo mail shows no awareness of design standards.

Bear in mind that Yahoo's basic goal is (correctly) increasing revenues. Hence we have a system driven by marketing and glitz, not responsive to how users are best served. Yes, spam attacks in swarm and navigation is confusing and counterintuitive (many of the features simply ignore principles of interactivity), and more ad copy is crammed down the user's throat. This increases revenues (important since the service itself is free), but it's ultimately counterproductive as users abandon the service. There has to be a thought out strategy and competent interface design or the it will go into rapid decline.

Listen to users.
