I have used Goldcar many times now and have not had a single problem with them. Always get a new car, yes you pay for a full tank of fuel but remainder always gets credited back to my account. In most cases the credit has taken place before I even get back to the UK which is pretty amazing. I always take the extra insurance with Goldcar because it is not worth arguing about but never accept the first price, you can get it less than half the original asking price if you question it and be polite with the staff, this generally works out cheaper than purchasing third party cover which means you will have to put down the 600 euro deposit. If you take their insurance there are no come backs and they are not holding any deposits that they could make charges against.
So in short, one of the best companies I have ever used and will continue to use. They may have had problems in the past but in the last couple of years in my experience, first rate.
