“Unscrupulous ”

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY-CUT PRICE CAR RENTALS BRISBANE! We were to visit relatives in Theodore 550 km from Brisbane in July 2014 and I telephoned them the month before telling them that I wanted a car for 10 days and that is where we would be driving it. They confirmed the booking by an email quoting $295.45 and attached a detailed list of conditions that I did not read, We were picked up promptly from the international airport and taken to their office 5 minutes away in transit telling our driver where we were going with their vehicle as we chatted on the way and completed the paperwork and credit card for an old Kia Rio auto. The last page to sign had a map of the area that they restricted their cars to (just Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast). We reiterated though that we needed to travel further so could not proceed with the booking. Although their terms and conditions for Area of Use of Vehicle state "Most vehicles are required to be used within a 250-400 Km radius. Rentals outside this area can be organized but must be approved prior to the rental and a surcharge may apply" they did not offer that. We asked for a refund of all except for the first of the 10 days hire charge. They refused and pointed out their cancellation policy which states "Within 24 hours or fail to arrive / collect vehicle - up to the full amount of the rental". They kept the full amount billing it to the credit card the very same day even though the vehicle was again available to hire from the very next day.
They took us back to the airport and we rented an Avis vehicle 4 months old with only 12000 km on the clock for not much more and without the restrictions. Avis have still not billed my credit card 3 days after the end of the 10 days rental.
Numerous phone calls over the next 10 days to their manager at Cutpricerentals failed to get any refund at all, each time him saying only that he would "look into the matter and call us". He would indicate with each call that he could not recollect the specific details. He never did call us back and we have no refund. We are pursuing this matter with the Office of Fair Trading Queensland.
