“This is an utterly, utterly brilliant film. ”

This is an utterly, utterly brilliant film.

The way it is filmed, i.e. as if you are there as a soldier, is ultra-realistic and so are the special effects. I think for realism this is the best war film. When the Allied troops have just landed and are trying to take the beach you watch through the eyes of a soldier and see people in front of you having a conversation, and suddenly there is an explosion and the guy's arm is gone and he starts screaming! It is amazingly realistic.

I think the film tailed off at the end a bit to be honest, and I didn't like the fact that Tom Hanks' character died but this doesn't really detract from the fact that this is a brilliant film and a totally unique cinematic experience. This is definitely a film to see.

One last point, this film takes all the perceived glamour out of war, i.e. the knife fight near the end (people who have seen it probably know what I mean) which is a bit unusual I think and this fact adds to the experience of this blockbuster film.
