“After upgrading to this Siemens SL42 mobile phone from...”

written by Mr. Bean. on 26/07/2002

Good Points
MP3 player, good quality silver cover, keypad layout, Mp3 player, big screen and nice orange backlight.

Bad Points
No link cable included in the package, external antenna.

General Comments
After upgrading to this Siemens SL42 mobile phone from a Sony Z5, I realised that I must have been using very out of date technology.

Menus are nice and easy to use and text messaging is a breeze with T9 predictive text input. The orange backlight is a great alernative to the horrible yellowish green on most phones. Now though, most phones developed have different backlight colours, and some, such as the Motorola V66, have a feature which can change the backlight colour.

The ringing tone composer is ok, not as easy to use as a Nokia's, and there are no sites that show the keys to create these ringing tones. But as I am a master in making ringing tones, I have no difficulty. Unfortunately, this phone does not have recordable ringing tones like its rival, the Sony Z7. (Oh well... You can't get them all!)

The Mp3 player is not as good as its older brother's one, (the SL45) but it will do. The sound quality is great and it is not affected by the phone being tossed around while doing things like skateboarding.

The external antenna is a bit of a pain, but Siemens did their best by making it short and flat, rather than the long thin ones that you get sticking into your leg whilst cycling.

The weight gives a feeling of quality, as a phone weighing next to nothing, (Such as the 8310) feels like there's nothing inside the phone. People go for light phones, but a phone too light tends to give me a cheap feeling.

Along with the outstanding, the SL42e does not lack the usual refinements of an up to date mobile phone. It has them all - appointment reminder, games, vibrating alert, etc.

If you are considering a good phone, go to www.mobileshop.com (The world's best mobile phone shop!) and purchase one! £149.99
