“Unable to prebook seats on flights”

Have holidayed in USA for last twenty years. Used net flights on numerous occasions to book flights,accommodation and car hire with no problems.This year we flew with my daughter and son in law to Orlando via Newark.We were unable to prebook seats and on the four flights we had to be allocated seats at the gate.On the first flight to Newark we had to take the last four seats available row 40 the last row next to the toilets The same thing happened on the other three flights. We were allocated whatever seats were available meaning we were in different seats spread over the plane. Don't know if Netflights could have done anything about this but united staff were not interested at the gates. Most of the other passengers had boarding passes with seats together. Again United staff did not seem to care and could offer no explanation why we had to wait till we got to the gate before they would issue boarding passes. This put a bit of a spoiler on our holiday as this had never happened in the last twenty years of holidaying in the USA.I would still use Netflights in the future but might reconsider if it came to light that they could have done something about the seating problem.
