I had to have my roof completely re-done soon after moving into my new home back in 2007. Early in 2013 high winds (I live on the south coast) blew off several roof tiles, leaving a gaping hole in my roof. I made my first-ever claim to an insurance company and an assessor came to check the damage.
UIA turned down the claim, saying that the original work had been sub-standard and that I should seek redress from the builder. Unsurprisingly after five or so years the roofer has disappeared and I can't contact them.
It seems to me that this sort of scenario is exactly what insurance is supposed to cover. UIA are happy to take thousands of pounds of my money in premiums but when it comes to the crunch, they simply won't pay up.
For a company whose logo is "Insurance with principles" I think they have behaved extremely badly and left me in a terrible position since I was made redundant and have no income but somehow need to find close to £1,000 to pay to have the problem rectified.
I advise any potential customers to give this awful company a wide berth. As they say, BUYER BEWARE!
