“Fantastic, made me realise how good at IT I actually am :)”

written by on 08/10/2013

I graduated with an Ordinary degree in Design from a well known university. This clearly wasn't my path and I was unable to land a job in the interaction design industry due to a few personal problems.

Anyway, I stumbled across someone's linkedin profile page when looking for a UK download mirror for Windows Server when the download was slow. I was volunteering for a local charity doing IT work after graduation as I couldn't find a job.

Anyway, after finding this LinkedIn guy's education being Just IT I quickly searched for Just IT - lo and behold - a "job guarantee" - surely this is some sort of scam? Anyway, I decided to give these guys a call and see what they were all about. Having been scammed online before in the very early noughties we as a family were somewhat weary of "too good to be true" offers so didn't call back and was advised by family not to spend money on course.

After a while, the temptation got to me and I decided to find out more. The more I found out about them, over their online presentation of the course material I decided this was for me. It seemed real enough. So I booked an interview with them and got into the course! :D Yay!

I am writing this 6 months after my probationary period at an international financial services company. It's a well paid job - more than their £18-25k job guarantee - it's my first job - which makes it even better!

Suffice to say, I had been intending on following the programme with their helpdesk orientated job goal but this never came to fruition after several interviews doing 1st line phone support. Thank goodness! Some of the jobs I had been put up for were pretty awful! £15k pa a 30 min train ride out of London, £17k in Hemel. You get the idea. But I have really landed on my feet with a £26k job in the City and a potential of earning £40k+ doing overtime if I want (I only work 168 days a year - so doing overtime is really easy to fit in).

Anyway. I would put it down to doing a lot of interviews in such a short space of time making the last job interview for this place I work in become a reality.

A lot of people in my workplace have been here for 20+ years so it's a good sign of a seriously stable company and the people there have worked their way up from doing my job to becoming manager of global operations, for example.

I really value the skills Just IT gave me to "point me in the right direction" in so far as being able to apply for jobs properly, talk to recruitment consultants, not as if they're your hero, here to save you, but as salespeople and so on.

I didn't really finish doing the certifications (Got as far as A+ and MCTS Win 7) but in my job you don't need anything like that - it's all Linux based and Linux is something I have been using since I was just hitting my teens in the late 90's so it's all good :-)

I am planning, however, to do LPIC-1 (Known as Linux+ to some) and quite possibly also ITIL Foundation although I don't really need to, as I don't really need to move job/company etc.

I really value the direction Simon's company has given to so many people and have recommended it to a few folk, it's their decision though - it's a fair bit of money - but if you have it - and don't have a job - spend it on this!

Simon's a strident businessman if you meet him. I took the blended learning course, so can't really comment on the quality of teaching. The monthly blended learning webinars were fantastic - I loved them a lot - a nice way to look forward to becoming an IT professional when you're jobless and have nothing better to do!

Comes highly recommended from me!

All the best and good luck whatever path you take!
