“Not enough carriages”

Written on: 18/07/2013

Arriva trains tend to be reliable on the whole. I haven't experienced many cancellations, unlike Virgin trains (which tend to break down) or Midland Trains (which are often short of a driver)so this is an important point. I also like the train staff who are friendly and courteous on the whole.

There is, however, one serious flaw in the service. There never seem to be enough carriages. This is particularly noticeable on Saturdays, when many people are travelling to visit friends, go shopping or go to the races at Chester. You can feel the disappointment when the Arriva train pulls into the station and there are only two carriages.

This seems to happen every single Saturday of the year. I am sure that Arriva must have received many complaints but are unable or unwilling to rectify the problem.

I think that for the amount of money that passengers pay for their tickets, they deserve a seat, with air-conditioning in summer. They should not be forced to fight other passengers to board the train, be knocked over by people scrambling for a seat and then left to stand in the heat for over an hour (depending on which station they board at) to get to Chester.

There is often luggage blocking the aisles, people standing in the aisles, bicycles left propped up against cases and the situation is becoming dangerous. The ticket collectors can sometimes barely get through. It is very difficult to reach the bathroom without tripping over somebody.

If there were a fire or a crash, I hate to imagine the consequences of this reckless overcrowding.

I have no idea why Arriva is unable to provide more than 2 coaches and I feel that the company is happy to take passengers' money since there is very little alternative to travel in north Wales. The company should be ashamed of itself.
