“Rubbish and Excellent”

written by minirollsrule on 17/07/2013

Hi

I had a problem recently where my fuel cap got siezed shut. No amount of pulling, twisting and wiggling with oil and release fluid could help and eventually I had to resort to drilling out the key barrel and forcing it open. Luckily nothing dropped into the tank and it all came off in one piece, phew!

So I ordered up a new cap from M&P and it came delivered on time and looked great but the rubber seal that came with itwas slightly too thin to make the requisit seal around the neck of the tank.

As I was up in stoke anyway and close to "the largest motorcycle breaker in Europe" - DK motorcycles, I thought they might be able to help me find a suitable used part to fix this problem.

This is where the trouble started...

I went up to spares desk and asked a chap if he could help me, explaining that all it really needs is a suitable seal from any other bike. I thought it would be a simple task of going to look at the used gas caps and parts they kept and picking off something similar to the thin one I had brought with me.

I was told in no uncertain terms that it was "not worth going to look for" as it would take too long. The spares guy told me that it would take him easily 30 mins to find one in his store room and that I would only want to pay a couple quid for the part so it wasnt worth his time.

I understood the buisness sense behind his thinking but he wasnt doing anything when I asked him anyway, he was just sitting on facebook chatting away!!!!!This part is one of those things that arent essential for driving along but are important and for just a small seal they make a lot of difference to the functionality of the tanks ability to contain petrol!

His laxidasical attitude meant that i was stuck with no seal to stop fuel pouring out of my bike in the event it went shiney side down. His laziness meant that for the sake of a couple quid and a bit of time searching I would not be able to ride my bike in safety!

I was completely outraged by this. I had been a customer at DK motorcycles for 2 years prior to that and brought the bike in for services many times and this is how i was to be treated??!!

Next line of attack...

I headed down to the service department where I introduced myself and chatted to the guys down there. They remembered my bike and who I was and apologised for the poor service I had recieved upstairs in spares.

They went out and had a poke around on some bikes that had yet to be broken down for spares to see if they could help. They put in the effort to find me the small piece of rubber that would make a massive difference to my biking safety. Eventually after less than 20 mins searching they found a bit of an old offroad bike that fitted the deal.

After apologising again for the treatment I had recieved upstairs they gave me the seal and said I could have it for free as it wasnt worth much to anyone.

So thats my experience of DK motorcycles in stoke...

Dont talk to the spares guys, they (well this one guy, it would be unfair to lump them all in together) dont bother to help you find what you need if its not as simple as looking it up on the computer. They dont put in the effort to help you out if you are in a tight spot and would rather leave you with an unridable bike just because they are too lazy!

Talk to the service guys. They are great! really nice chaps who look after their customers and care when you are in a tricky situation and do their best to help you out. They are also great service technicians based on my previous dealings with them over the years.

I hope the manager from DK sees this post and makes some adjustments to their staffs attitudes, as from now on, I will actively encourage people to go elsewhere for their spares!
