“Avanti giro 1 road bike from Wheelies”

written by artistglyn on 08/07/2013

Having looked at a load of options I had almost settled on a Merida when I came across this new bike from New Zealand ( yes, I know they make them in Taiwan ). It speced up on par with the Mereida but was a shade lighter. When I checked on line most places had it for £599, with a couple at £499. For a nice looking bike with carbon forks and basic Shimano compact set it was a steel at Wheelies for £450, plus, if I spent another fifty quid I could spread it over 2 years interest free !
I needed to check a few things so rang Wheelies. The girl on the phone was incredibly helpful, and , although not fully up to speed technically, wasn't afraid to say so and go and ask someone who was.The whole deal was painless and the bike was promised delivery in two days. I also ordered up some new shoes and peddles to take me over £500.
The bike arrived as promised, with all ordered items, in first class condition. I just needed to fit the bars, harden up the tyre pressures, adjust the saddle and that was it. All the gearing was set perfectly and I've not had to touch it.
If your buying your first road bike, this is a great one to start with. I've teamed it with a pair of light action shimano peddles and budget shimano shoes. The cleats are nice and easy to disengage and give you a really nice feel on the peddles. On the raod the Avanti feels surefooted, agile and stable. The shimano shifters are slick enough for most situations. If you think they aren't fast enough, then you need a whole different level of bike. I have no issues with them.
So Wheelies did a great job at a fantastic price. Avanti make a great bike for not a lot of money. So far I've done about 250 miles with no problems.I would recommend both.
