“Great value and very comfortable - so far, so good!”

written by MrsJT on 15/03/2013

Bought this mattress online, taking a bit of a chance as could find no online reviews of it (hence my own review here). I've made this review quite detailed which I hope will be helpful! We had to buy an Ikea sized (European) double mattress - we didn't want to get it from Ikea and we quickly found our choices were very limited. We wanted a pocket sprung mattress made with proper, steel springs and weren't bothered about having any particular kind of topper.

We opted for the La Romantica Madrid in continental double size. It has steel springs, I believe full sized, and comes with a 5cm V60 density memory foam topper, top and bottom. The steel springs are full size I think, because when it was delivered it wasn't rolled or vacuum packed. It was also about 4 times heavier than any mattress we've ever had! Apparently if delivery states the mattress comes vacuum packed it is usually an indicator that the springs are made from foam or are not full sized - I don't know if this is a bad thing or not, but I really wanted to try to get as traditionally a manufactured mattress as possible.

It's traditionally hand tufted from top to bottom but is not side stitched, so there is the potential for roll off if you're lying right at the edge. Having done some research on various sites I believe 5cm is a fairly standard and acceptable depth for the memory foam layers and V60 is the average density you find.

We've had it a couple of days and it is incredibly comfortable, it's meant to be medium to firm but the memory foam makes it feel soft yet supportive. If you're new to memory foam it takes some getting used to - it does feel a bit like the bed's trying to eat you! My husband and I have both slept really well on it though: I'm 37 weeks pregnant and for the first time have been able to throw out the pillows I had in bed to support my back and bump, and my husband had a shoulder injury from squash and for the first time in months has been able to sleep on his sore shoulder.

The only thing I'd say, if you're new to memory foam, is that even with the Climasmart cover which is meant to reduce the heat generated by your body and the foam, it does get hot. Memory foam absorbs your body's temperature to mould the foam to your body - I think it might be a bit of an issue in summer and it's a shame the mattress doesn't come with a winter memory foam layer on one side and a summer latex layer on the other.

We purchased the bed from Bed Kingdom online and found the service and delivery excellent. This mattress is available elsewhere on the internet but Bed Kingdom is the only place I've found selling the Continental double size.

I've read such negative things about all kinds of mattresses, high street sellers and brands going through the reviews on this site, I feel I can only keep my fingers crossed that our mattress remains in good condition for a reasonable time! It is mostly handmade and is from a small independent manufacturer, so we're hoping it will last us. It's definitely so far, so good with the La Romantica Madrid!
