“Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practices, 4th...”

written by Cchang on 05/02/2005

Good Points
I have taught my introductory archaeology course using this book through the first, second, third, and now fourth edition. I always tell my students, "This is the best textbook on the subject and don't re-sell it or leave it on the curb. It will be your loss and someone's gain." The boxes on Pompeii, Mayan archaeology, etc. are head and shoulders above most of the introductory text material. Moreover, students actually like reading this book.

Bad Points
My only complaint is that I like all four editions, each for a different reason, and wish that the authors would keep a resource open, so that when they change or leave out a case from the previous edition, those of us who found that case intriguing can still find it (online) without having to dig out our old editions. (I am so crazy about the book, I keep all the editions for future reference). Most graduate students and professional archaeologists could do with reviewing this text from time to time. Not enough good to say about it.
