“Refused a refund or exchange on faulty item”

My partner purchased an item in Brighton store at JD Sports to give me for x-mass. After close look I noticed that item is defective. Took it back to the store, but instead of refund or exchange they accused me of wearing it, despite all labels and tags unattached, and short period of time since purchase, and told me that my partner should have checked it in store when purchased. Customer service is unacceptable, be aware as there are quite few reviews like this.
