“You'll need a case”

written by warrenkerrigan on 03/12/2012

I've been an iPhone user for a while and I've always liked to use it without a case...at least until it get too scratched to do so. My main reason behind this is that the device looks and feels so good that it is a shame to cover it up.

So why use a case at all I hear you ask? Well once the phone gets scratched you need to cover it up. With previous iPhones the choice is massive, however, so far the iPhone 5 is lacking in cases. Normally this would not be a problem as by the time my phone is so scratched it the cases are everywhere. However with the new iPhone 5's beveled design, it scratches at the slightest thing and after only a couple of months, I really need a case.

No doubt you have heard lots about the new phone scratching a lot. Please don't underestimate this. It really does scratch and dent a lot!

The other slight issue is that personally I feel the screen is not too long. This is especially true as most of the iPhone "back" buttons are on the top left of the page, and my thumb (on a normal size hand), has to stretch enough that the phone starts to slip from you hand. Not ideal when even a small drop knocks a chunk out of it.

Outside of that, its the best iPhone ever. It is thinner, lighter, faster and has a better screen. Yes the screen is better, I just think its a little too big. In fact pretty much everything else is better than before. But then why wouldn't it be. Every year technology moves on and they make things lighter and faster.

So if you want the best iPhone yet, buy the iPhone 5.

If however, you would just like an iPhone, then I would suggest the iPhone 4S. Save yourself some money and get that one. Or if you don't use the camera that much, get the 4 for free on most operators.

In summary, I am glad I bought it, but for most people I don't think there is enough upside.

If you have an iPhone 3GS or older, get down to the shops and buy one. You will love it.

If you have a 4, its a tough call. If you are happy at the moment, wait until next year and get the iPhone 5s, 6, 28 or whatever they come up with.

However, and this is the key one...if you have an iPhone 4S, don't bother. Wait...spend the money on a nice Christmas present of a new case to make your old iPhone look nicer!
