“Churchill Disgusting Service”

written by Crostonblue on 31/07/2012

I took out building and contents insurance with Churchill in November 2011, knowing that I live on a flood plain I was conscious of 2 questions on the Churchill online system, these were -

1. To the best of your knowledge has your property suffered from flooding in the last 10 years?
2. Is your home currently suffering from flooding or at risk of flooding?

Q1 was easy as the last time the house was flooded was in 1987, Q2 was the one I wanted clarifying so before I continued the process I called Churchill and asked for clarification. I explained that I lived on a flood plain but there was no warning or risk in force at that time and that the river was about 30m fom my house. The lady I spoke to stated that I could answer 'NO' to Q2 and proceed with taking out the policy which I did.

After suffering flood water into my house in June - incidentally the flood in June this year was from the drains backing up and not from the river - I immediately contacted Churchill to make a claim and to be honest at the start they were very helpful - this was the first claim I have ever made on insurance (about 20 years) and I was nervous about going through the process.

Things went downhill very quickly, poor communication, drying equipment leaking and PAT test date passed - Churchill very quickly issued me a £200 compensation cheque for the poor service I had received. I have just been informed that my claim has been put on hold because I failed to disclose that my property was at risk of flooding when I took out the policy!! And that my property in my locality suffered flooding in 2008 - this is true but was 1/4 mile away and I had also mentioned that during my call prior o taking out the policy!!

So I am now living in a gutted house with my wife and 4 yr old daughter whilst Churchills play pedantics and lie whilst accessing me of being dishonest and of non-disclosure of information, to this end I have contacted the FInancial Ombudsman who was surprised and ven Churchill's Loss Adjuster was amazed.

To say the service is disgusting would be an understand and I'm determined this will cost Churchills a lot more than £200, I will be expecting recompense for the stress and upset to my wife and myself and the ongoing upset for my daughter who can't play with her toys as they're pack away and has to wear shoes in the house at all times as we have no flooring now on the ground floors!
