We bought a Tefal Actifry from Comet in March 2011. The lid cracked and broke after only 7 months. Comet replaced it. The replacement has just broken (same fault). A web search revealed that this is a very common problem with the units, and obviously a quality / design fault.
Tefals position is that the warranty runs from the original purchase date of March 2011.
Comet has refused to replace the second unit even though they are in breach of our statutory rights (goods must be fit for purpose and durable – with the much reported problems they clearly are not).
Having spoken to the Trading Standards Consumer Advice Service we have been advised that it sounds like they are in breach of The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (the goods are not of sufficient quality, namely they are not what a reasonable person would call durable).
After several lengthy calls to both our local Comet store (Ipswich) and their head office, (where we informed them of the above), they still refused to replace the item.
We are now in the process of issuing formal proceedings (on a matter of principal more than anything else).
We bought all of our electrical products from Comet and have spent thousands of pounds with them over the years.
Needless to say we will never shop there again. They truly deserve the appalling ratings that they seem to get on independent review sites.
