“I brought a 3-seater x 2-seater corner sofa from DFS...”

written by kd1982uk on 04/09/2006

Good Points
The sofas are great - if you can ever get one delivered!

Bad Points
The most terrible service ever!

General Comments
I brought a 3-seater x 2-seater corner sofa from DFS recently. I live in a block of flats so I was worried about delivery. They assured me it would be no problem but asked me to describe the staircase. I told them it was quite narrow and it had banisters, but I had easily managed to take my current 3-seater sofa up the stairs by lifting it up and above the banisters. They said that was okay as the sofa came as a 3-seater and a 2-seater and the two sections would be joined together in my flat.

So I paid for the sofa and waited for 3 months for it to be delivered. But the delivery men said they could not lift the sofa above head height and spouted something about "health and safety regulations" and causing "possible damage" to the sofa. So I couldn't accept it, and I went back to the store at the weekend. I asked for a refund, but they said they couldn't give me a refund because the sofa had been manufactured and delivered in good faith and the delivery men tried with "reasonable effort" - to deliver it. So I asked for the sofa to be redelivered so I could gather some friends together who would be willing to lift the sofa up the stairs (since I couldn't lift it by myself). The salesperson said that since my sofa had been refused upon delivery it would have been put up for sale again "at a discount price" and I would have to select another sofa from their store. I didn't believe this and told them I would buy back the sofa. They said the person who ordered the sofa was exempt from buying it back at a discount. The sofa I had ordered had been discontinued so there was no chance of me being able to buy the same sofa again, so the salesperson showed me to a selection of more expensive corner sofas - one of which was almost exactly the same as the first sofa I brought. These more expensive sofas came in four sections (not two, like the 'cheaper' sofas) and the salesperson claimed they were much easier to manoeuvre around staircases.

I found myself shelling out another £200 for a more expensive sofa and I am currently waiting another 3 months for that one to be delivered. And, make no mistake; I will have an army of people ready and waiting to take this sofa up the stairs if those delivery men come armed once again with more excuses.
