“Roberts ecologic 4 RD21 on test”

written by russz on 26/04/2012

i returned the previous DAB radio and the guy in the shop was kind enough to let me change the radio for something
more to my liking. i had seen the more expensive roberts but didnt want to spend so much money on a radio that will be used
occasionally. after having the test drive of the roberts my mind was made up. at this stage it was clear that i would have to shell out some more money to get what i wanted ... but i guess it would be worth it.
well i have to say .. this radio is awesome. the radio has separate bass and treble controls which really work. i would say they have overdone it as even set at 1/2 way the tone is very nice to listen to. a good amount of bass and very clear. turn the bass full up and the volume has to be kept under control .. or the radio just overloads. the FM tuner is impressive ... i have some older radios that i thought were quite good ... but the sensitivity and selectivity on this radio compares to a stand alone tuner in a hi-fi system.
the DAB tuner is ok. i guess its all down to the chip they are using. it seems much the same as other radios ive tested. i did a scan outside and found plenty of stations. indoors its average on dab.
oh the display. now this is a bit strange. i guess you could easily read this dial from the other side of the room. its ridiculously
big. and the dial lamp doesn't go out using mains power .. yet on dry cells the dial is very hard to read !!
but generally i like this radio so much im contemplating buying one of those internet streaming versions ..

my verdict : well im pleased with the sound. the tuning dial is a little on the light side .. easy to knock off fqy. the radio is VERY heavy when the batteries are fitted. it gave 3 hours usage on a charge using some old D cells. not tried akalines yet.overall the radio is solid and well made.
