“Will not fly Monarch again”

Written on: 05/04/2012

I'd never flown with Monarch before, but was obliged to do so as part of a package holiday with VJV, flying Gatwick to Luxor. Had no idea they were a budget airline, so was not prepared. Weight restrictions are draconian: hand luggage allowance just 5kg. Had a small shoulder cabin bag, but with just camera, binoculars, essential chargers, book, etc, the bag easily weighed that. Then at the check-in desk they insisted I also put my (small) handbag into the bag, thus increasing the weight, whilst some couples were made to unpack and repack their hand luggage distributing the weight allowance evenly, instead of taking an average of the 2 bags (how jobsworth can you get). I paid £80 for extra legroom for both flights and am glad I did as other seats were cramped. The aircraft was extremely noisy and cold, and when I requested a blanket, was told it would cost £6 (I froze instead). Paid £2.50 for earpieces, then discovered no film during the 5+hr flight, just old TV programmes, and no papers or magazines(they'd run out). Had breakfast at Gatwick as take-off at 1010 and was then served another breakfast halfway through the flight, instead of lunch (cheaper I guess). Although aircrew were pleasant and helpful, I will not be flying with them again if I can help it. Far too 'Big Brother'. At least with Easyjet, you know what you're getting/not getting. Wish I'd travelled to Luxor with Egyptair (with whom I have travelled before).
