“Lots of Cases”

written by KateMcGraw on 16/05/2022

This course was very intense, but packed full of useful cases for the exam. The structure on zoom worked well and there were surprisingly few technical problems and time keeping problems considering the number of people participating.

The main strength of the course was the number of cases- candidates took it in turn to do the station as they would in the exam. Group sizes meant that each person probably did 6-8 stations themselves and watched around 10 times that number. They focused on lots of cases that you wouldn't consider (the clinical stations were lots of general examinations where there isn't a set pattern rather than the standard cardiac or respiratory).
I think with the groups it would have been useful for us to have had 5 mins before starting the cases to work out an order- whilst we were told alphabetical we weren't given a list in that order and I think most groups ended up going randomly at least for the first session until someone had a moment over lunch to work it all out. Just having a few minutes for someone to write a list and agree it with everyone would have made it easier and less stressful to start as we didn't all know each other.

I think the main weakness was the lack of overall advice about how to structure and key points not to miss. I really liked it when we joined a group and, before anyone had a turn, we were told some important points (such as how to approach giving information to a teenager). Whilst I appreciate that a lot of approaches are specific to the case, a few more general bits of advice would be useful.
I think the other weakness was that, in order to cover all of the cases, some of the timings were changed. I think one of the main pitfalls in the exam is getting the timing wrong and sometimes, to fit in, these timings were changed on the course. I think that if we are getting a bit behind, there are so many cases that we could sacrifice practicing a few (ideally still knowing the brief so we can practice the case in our own time).

Overall very good course.
Quite expensive (although seems to be in line with other similar courses).
