My insurance was due for automatic renewal in January and I received a text a few days after the renewal date saying my payment was declined and they were charging me a failed payment fee of £20 on top of the premium.
I could not understand why payment was declined as there were adequate funds in my account.
I logged in and saw my payment card had expired last year so the reason they could not get funds was because they were trying to draw funds from an expired card.
I phoned the company and gave details of an updated card. I asked them to waive the late payment fee as their systems should have recognised the expiry date had expired and it was unreasonable to charge a £20 penalty.
If it were the case that funds were not available I would have accepted the penalty as it would have been my fault.
The company told me they would not be refunding the £20 even though the lady I spoke to thought I had a valid point but her computer said no.
I will not be renewing with them next year. They have lost my future business for a petty £20
