“Ridiculously overcharged”

I live in a small three bedroom student flat. This is our third year with Eon as our provider. We have a fixed payment contract and have continually been overcharged, usually only by a small amount of perhaps £20 between 3. However, following updating our plan in September and choosing supposedly the cheapest deal (£64 a month for gas and electricity for a flat of three beds, no sitting room, a small kitchen and one bathroom) we came up for review this January. We have now been told, completely out of the blue and with zero attempts to notify us of any debt prior, that we are now in dept of £273 for three months (!!!). As students who are in class most of the day, and regularly go home on the weekends, we do not see how this is possible. The flat was unoccupied for three weeks over the Christmas period. They refused to explain how we had gone over our monthly bill by such a drastic amount, just simply saying that is what you have used. We were then told that our January usage was £74 total, so just £10 over our set rate. I have no idea how Eon has decided that we therefore used £264 worth of electricity and gas ON TOP of our £64 monthly bill. There was no monthly break down and we have clearly been overcharged, there is no way we use that much energy in such a small flat. Very disappointed in their service and show no aspect of any client loyalty, will be switching providers as soon as have paid off this debt. Surprisingly three students don't have £273 just lying around to spend on overpriced energy bills. Would actively discourage anyone to choose Eon as their provider, and will be telling family and friends this.
