“I bought a TR300 to replace my Getzen which was sent...”

written by Disley Titchbender on 31/03/2011

I bought a TR300 to replace my Getzen which was sent away for refurbishment.

The instrument had to fill in for my Getzen over several gigs.

The instrument looks fairly average with a laquered finish which imparts a synthetic/plastic feel to the surface of the instrument.

The intonation of the instrument is very suspect. When tuning a trumpet, it is generally accepted that you will maybe have to pull out the tuning slide as much as 15mm. This instrument is in pitch when the slide is pulled out to 42mm. The instrument in its default slide position is grossly sharp in pitch. The instrument would have benefitted froma longer lead pipe and longer pipe to the 3rd valve inlet.

The valve set is OK and performs adequately, as long as the valves are routinely kept clean and lubed with a good quality oil.

The 3rd valve has an adjustable finger ring and plastic limiter slide. The engineering tolerances on all of the valve slides are quite abysmal. The slides are very loose and in the case of the 3rd valve, would fall out if not retained by the limiter.

The instrument tends to suffer a rapid accumulation of water.

There is no definitive ring when the bell is tapped, and it produces a sound very akin to tapping an old lead pipe (donk donk)!

All in all I wouldn't make this particular model the first choice for a beginner. I believe that there are too many issues with this instrument and the last thing a student wants is to have to fight with the instrument.
