“We were met at the reception of the Merville Beach...

written by quattro05265 on 24/06/2005

Good Points
The level of service was excellent, the facilities and location were perfect and the food and drink was of a very high standard

Bad Points
The bar shuts at twelve midnight although you can still sit and chat. No-one gets up to dance or listen to the music even though it is excellent.

General Comments
We were met at the reception of the Merville Beach Hotel with a welcoming drink by the friendly hotel staff and after signing in were shown our accommodation which was in a chalet block of three. The accommodation was tidy and had been decorated with flowers by the room maids who serviced the rooms twice a day. The bar is well manned by the waiters who show you to your table and bring your choice from a wide range of local drinks, the local beer is particularly good. The meals in the restaurant range from buffet style to set menu and theme night and although we found the food excellent we were told that they would cook anything for us if we didn't agree with the menu. The service was excellent and the staff could not do enough for you. The all inclusive water sports were the best we have seen anywhere with water skiing, wind surfing, sailing and snorkelling among those offered free by friendly staff who also gave lessons to those who required them. We would definitely go again though it is best to advice that June is the winter season and although the weather is sunny and hot for British tastes the hotel is only half full. Later in the year the summer months can be very hot the hotel full with difficulty in finding seats in the bar, restaurant, pool and beach, and the charming waiters and waitresses unable to spend time chatting to you because they are too busy. One high spot of our stay was our wedding anniversary when the band played a song for us and we were presented with a cake by the hotel duty manager. On our return to the room we found it had been decorated by the staff this along with the enormous bouquet of flowers (£10 worth at least £50 at home) made my wife's night. The hotel is 15 minutes walk or a short £2 taxi ride to Grand Bay which is served by a surprisingly modern range of supermarkets and duty free shops. Here you can arrange deep sea fishing submarine and catamaran trips. Car hire is from about £30 per day and if you get up early enough you can drive all the way round in a day. We drove half the way round on roads which although badly signposted were very quiet outside of the main towns we used half a tank of petrol and it cost £8:50 to fill up. All in it was a great holiday and we would recommend it to anyone else.
