James Cameron's Avatar is a spectacular comeback from the Aliens and Terminator director. He has spent the last 4 years lavishly creating a 3D fantasy world that looks breathtakingly real and has refrained from using the usual 3D gimmicks (items that look like they're coming straight for you) instead the 3D enhances the experience making the animated characters merge seamlessly with the real life actors.



The story follows a long tradition of technology versus nature films (Ferngully for example) set on Pandora a planet where unobtanium is a sought after ore that unhappily can be found in vast amounts under a settlement of Na'vi who are the natives of Pandora, cue a standoff between the military force after the ore and the tribe. Torn between the two is Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic marine who is given a chance to use an Avatar identity to infiltrate the Na'vi. He splits his indentify between two very different lives and before long starts to side with the Na'vi and decides to fight back against the military headed by Colonel Quaritch, who uses ruthless and gung-hom tatics against the "treehuggers".

The action in the film doesn't give up so make sure your 3D glasses are comfortable for the duration of the film. There are some great fight scenes with nods to some of Cameron's best works; the mechanised fighting suits are a step up from Ripley's loader and Michelle Rodriguez's Chacon could have been part of Aliens marines.



With strong performances from Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri you will get caught up in the film as it storms ahead to the amazing ending, when you have a minute to remember that this is animation you will be impressed. I'm now waiting for the Blu Ray so I can watch a second time and really take in the scenery.
