I purchased the HTC Magic from Vodafone about six months ago now. I am very pleased with the software and functionality. Using Google Apps on the phone is great and the set-up was a doddle.



The major issue O have with the phone is the build quality. The phone is meant to last a two year contract and it isn't going to make it. Already after six months, the phone looks warn and old. It is not as easy to get skins for the Magic like the iPhone, and as a result the phone takes it's fair share of bashing.



The only other complaint is the app store is rather limited compared to the iPhone store. It looks like developers would rather spend developing for Apple which is a shame.



Overall I would give it a go if you don't want to be tied into an iPhone, otherwise I would say go with Apple.
