Joan G. Robinson, When Marnie Was There (Modern Classics on Tape S.)

I first read "When Marnie was there" when I was twelve years old. I'd borrowed it from my local library. I remember feeling very touched by a profound writing which had unknowingly reached forth into my psyche. I finished reading it again this morning. I am now forty two years of age. The book had the same impact on me. Joan G Robinson's forte is one of compassion. She subtly presents the affects of a destructed family which are slowly revealed through the interaction of the characters. This is simple child psychology with its causes, effects and accessible solutions. A beautifully poetical book, mystical and at the same time perfectly down to earth.

Here is my view on When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson. I had just finished reading two novels and now wanted something of my own. I picked up When Marnie Was There just for sake at the bookstore. I had recently read two Modern Classics books and figured this one should be good as well. After the first two or three chapters I was disappointed, unlike other books I had read this one was not calling me to turn its pages and it was very easy for me to put it down. However, when Marnie shows up things begin to change and the pages are turned quickly. It became more and more interesting although it was not bluntly exciting. Towards the end I kept making guesses to explain what was happening and slowly the mystery is unraveled and I was left with a sureal feeling of 'wow'. Children will enjoy this book very much because though it's brilliance is subtle it must have been written with magic in someone's heart because it is just as startling and mysterious.
