James Herbert, Fluke - Synopsis:

"He was a stringy mongrel, wandering the streets of the city, driven by a ravenous hunger and hunting a quarry he could not define. But he was something more. Somewhere in the depths of his consiousness was memory clawing its way to the surface, tormenting him, refusing to let him rest. The memory of what he once had been. A man".

First published in 1977, this early offering from James Herbert (the master of horror) was a little shock. Following the novels "The Rats", "The Fog" and "The Survivor", one would guess that this novel was going to be along similar lines of horror if not that of a splatterpunk novel. But no! The novel is not a horror in the slightest, it is a light fantasy story about a dog who remembers being a man in a previous life.

This novel will grip you with the charater of the dog, Fluke, as he endevours to go on his quest to uncover the memories that haunt him. The book spirals to a climax of suspense as the truth is uncovered. This novel is carefully written with a powerful storyline that will stay with you for a long time afterwards.

A highly enjoyable book.
