We Had A Dolby Pro Logic Philips 28" Widescreen Tv

We had a Dolby Pro Logic Philips 28" Widescreen TV until my mum tripped over the dog and knocked it off the stand. When putting in a claim with our insurance they couldn't find a Philips 28" Widescreen TV with Dolby Pro Logic any more so they replaced it with this thing, saying it was the same quality.

This JVC TV is nowhere near the quality we got from the Philips, for a start the Philips had Dolby Pro Logic on it, this has only got stereo sound, and not very good speakers on the front either. Luckily we have an AV receiver to take care of that.

The side inputs are seriously lacking with no S-Video input on the side and the Philips TV used to have a clicky thing where the inputs would come out of the side (to hide and protect them when they are not in use), these inputs look just like a hole has been cut in the TV chassis and pushed in, the inputs don't even curve with the side of the TV there is just a big square hole with the inputs hiding inside. Also where the inputs are there is also the buttons to change channels, these buttons are really small circular rubber buttons and are something I wouldn't expect to see on a TV (or at least if they were put on a TV really should be covered up with some plastic to make it look nicer to the end user.

Then we move on to the picture, the picture looks really bad, we've only had the TV for a day and there is blue colouring bleeding everywhere into the other colours, tried changing the colour settings from Warm to Normal to Cool and it didn't make any difference. The old TV was nearly 10 years old and the picture was still fine on it, this things only 1 day old and the picture quality is seriously problematic.

One other thing that I'm a bit wary about with the TV is the lack of vents on the back of it. I'm quite sure a TV is meant to have vents somewhere on it to keep it cool (the Philips had loads of vents on the back and side), this one has only got two small vents at the top, hopefully that will keep it cool enough? Maybe?

We're only going to put up with it for about 6 months until we save for a new one, and then also change our household insurance as we think our insurer has ripped us off well and truly with this piece of garbage.

As I Said,i Liked Everything About This Set But It

As I said,I liked everything about this set but it went into zoom mode on it's own and stuck there.

It has been in for repair for 4 weeks now but I am told by JVC that they have NEVER come across this problem before and it can't be fixed.

Sorry but I cant afford to throw away £500 ON A TV every 17 months.

I add to same problem with JVC 56 inch HDTV

It was bought in November 2003 3 week later broke nothing dead screen call tech support they send a techki with a new Processor for my TV, fix the problem 1 week later TV blow again call back JVC and after 23month of negociation with the engi and techki of JVC they send a new KIT ( new Inside KIT) arround 2000$ can. Techki comes and changes the part. Tv was working for 3 week and blow again Call back and complaint on JVC and they answer me that is not their problem if the TV was still dead at this time. So now after 10 month and 3000$ can for the tv I still do not have TV in Living room and the JVC rep shoot me I alone with this they dont want to change the part or replace for a new or refund me. and I Still have 2year and 2 month of warranty on it. Now I contact a laywer and I will meet JVC CANADA in court to have my money back.

So my personal opinion is stay away FROM JVC.

Its a bit confusing in that a new law has just been introduced which puts the onus on the retailer to address and issues. Its not as comprehensive as was the original intention. It still gives the consumer the right to take a retailer to task if, for instance, a TV becomes a right off after only 18 months. This is clearly not fit for purpose but it appears to be a bit vague on proof. Although it has shifted the "blame" to the retailer/manufacturer to prove otherwise. At this point I am only going by articles I have read in the press and magazines. I can only suggest asking Trading Standards offices for detailed info. My impression is that it wll still be difficult to pursue a case and you will still need persistence and determination but the law has been improved. At the end of the day a Judge will need to make the first decision under the law to set a precedent. I would have thought that in the case of a TV becoming unrepairable after 18 months would be a simpler justification for "not fit for purpose" than say an intermittant fault that occurs after the warranty. Of course it is still the case that if a fault occurs on that basis during and after warranty the law generally views it as the same fault and therefore still for the retailer to fix. I had this very debate with Dixons a few months ago with a faulty Sky box and in the end they accepted that it had been an ongoing fault and swapped the box several months after the warranty had run out.

Sadly, you have to make nuisance of yourself. Running naked through your local Dixons shouting that they are crud seems to work........

Have you got more details on the EU law regarding this please!??!?

topgazza

Its a fact that under EU law(one of the only good things about the EU) items have to be fit for purpose. Which in this context for defects, is 5years, on some items it is longer. You can certainly go to Trading Standards in your local Town and get the exact wording and write to a company's Cust Service and if they refuse to respond positively then threaten to sue in the County Court. Its easy peasey to do and they WILL cave in before that. Lets face it, £500 is not to be sneezed at.

Its not in manufacturers interest to publicise this but there is plenty of info on the Web and either Trading Standards and Citizens Advice to confirm it

That's good news then! The silver lining to the cloud. My JVC TV still works fine and I'm very happy with it if anyone is interested...
