I've Had The Advent 6412dvd Laptop For 2 Or 3 Year

I've had the Advent 6412DVD laptop for 2 or 3 years now and it is beginning to show its age. I use it daily and the keyboard and stood up well. It's a comfy and firm keyboard and key actions are positive.

As I said it's getting slow - it runs Win XP now, and I've added more memory but there are still some times that it's slow.

The only problem I've had is the screen. It flickers and the light goes off on occasion - I think that the automatic off switch is dodgy. A few movements of the screen up and down sort this out and it invariably works well thereafter.

As A Student Looking For A Good Spec Laptop But Fo

As a student looking for a good spec laptop but for lowest cost I found that the Advent 6412DVD to meet these (October 2001). Ever since I have had it there seems to be problems with the screen, with it flickering between on and off when it feels like it or when I move it. Highgrade were little help, and not very prompt at fixing the problem, or making sure it was collected in the first place! PC Service Call were much better, and I got advice on a battery/power supply problem I was having, which now seems to have dissapeared.

It was interesting to read your review, as I have had the exact same problems with my Advent 6412DVD laptop; also bought in 2001. Went back in at least twice to fix screen flickering, and had the keyboard replaced as one of the keys fell out. Fortunately it was under warranty. Also, the DVD door kept catching and would not run, and so it was replaced, but with a black one rather than the rather nice blue original. I must say I was glad of my warranty with this one, and I can say that the warranty people from Dixons were very good; returning it fixed within the few days turnaround time as promised. The CMOS battery problem is a recent one, after not using the laptop for a while, and I am looking up how to replace it on the net at the moment, as my warranty is not applicable now.

Several 'repairs' Under Extended Warrenty Via Pcwo

Several 'repairs' under extended warrenty via PCWorld. Thank goodness I took out the 5 years extended cover. No problems for first year at all. Then I hit problems with the computer hanging, refusing to re-start, and freezing. Took back to PC World and got good prompt action and pleasant service. Collected from repair a week later and no problems for 3 months. Then it all happened again, together with a black screen. Back to PC World, wait a week, and OK for a while. Next problem was a display fault with blue and yellow pattern line across screen at different positions. Fortunately I took photoevidence at fault time, and took with me when I next visited PC World. This supported my claim of a problem, and eventually M/B was replaced, which also solved black screen problem. Since then, touch wood, no problems. Advice to anyone with problems - be firm, be polite, and above all try to take photo evidence to support your problem.
