I Purchased This Lens For Use With My D100. I Do
I purchased this lens for use with my D100. I do a lot of cropping, so pictures are generally enlarged 20-50%. I've found that when tripod mounted, the lens satisfies my needs well. There is some fall off in sharpness at 300mm, but can be improved by dropping back to around 280mm. I try to maintain apertures in the f1:8-f1:14, and at those apertures get edge to edge sharpness. Color rendition is wonderful. I am pleased with the lens.

This Nikkor Is A Great Lens For The Money, But Ver
This Nikkor is a great lens for the money, but very difficult to handhold w/ISO 100 speed film. Just not enough light. Great for the beach and field shots...go 400 speed for wooded areas and always keep a tripod handy.
Any 300mm should be on a tripod (OK... I don't have a Canon and I have never used a Canon IS lens...so there are exceptions) I use this lens handheld... but only under 150.... Bang for the buck... its a great lens.. but I do notice a fall off in light and sharpness at 300.. back it off to 290 and it looks great..
This lens is also super light... great for travel.
