“Fun, But Complicated”

★★☆☆☆

[The Brand] I want to take a second to talk about the brand. Traxxas is a massive, international company that has a history of designing amazing RC vehicles. Any hobby store worth mentioning will carry Traxxas parts, they are simply the standard. That said, if anything breaks, you know you can replace it with ease. The Ken Block Fiesta Kit includes the car, radio set, a small NIMH battery, wall charger and a novel of reading material for you to go through. I'll hammer out each item one-by-one and finish with the car on my usual 3 terrains. [Battery/Charger] The included battery is a 1200 mah, NIMH batter. If that's gibberish to you then heres what it means: Traxxas included a battery that you can expect about 15min of runtime from. There is a space on the car for a second battery but on the brushed edition you must hook them up in series... meaning double the runtime. The wall charger is a bit of a joke. It takes nearly an hour for a single charge and is mostly in the box to call it "Ready to run". A good first purchase for this truck is a new charger, you'll be happy you did! [Radio] Traxxas includes a 27mhz AM radio that is frankly, ancient. By modern RC standards the radio is basic, uncomfortable and sometimes even unreliable. If your looking for a second upgrade, get a new radio! A stellar 2.4 ghz set will only run you $20 and its worth every penny! This thing is an olympic class fencing sword! [ The Car] The chassis for the KB (Ken Block) edition is the same that Traxxas uses for all the 1/16th scale RCs. However, when you throw the body on, the measurments are closer to that of a 1/12th scale car. All of the electronics are water proof, with a small hatch for you to put your reciever in. The motor is the Titan 12t. This has been around for a while but folks love it! It's reliable, fast and not nearly as noisey as some of the competition. The suspension was an interesting point on the car. Traxxas markets this as an onroad car, but the suspension is way too loose for competition driving. More on that in my terrain reviews. One thing to note is that if you ever get tired of your KB edition car, just swap a few parts out and you can make any of the other 1/16th scale cars. That's pretty cool and ups the value. Your not just buying one car, but the potential to make several! *****Test Time******* I used my usual 3 terrains for testing an RC: Dirt track, On-road track, heavy off-road.... So lets go! [Dirt Track] Since the KB edition was meant for on road use, this was more for fun. Despite that, the car did fairly well. The tires didnt hook up on the dirt but those can be replaced. The biggest thing here was the lack of suspension travel. For this edition of the car the A-arms were shortened, which limits how the car can absorb the shock of a jump. [Heavy Off Road] Just for giggles I brought this to an old contrction site to see it go through the mud. The car moved like a brick. However its important to remember that with just a few mods you can turn this into a Monster Truck, where this terrain is easy as can be. [On-Road Track] I saved this part for last since this is what the car was made for. Keep in mind that I tested this on a competition level track. That means it's perfectly smooth and race ready. So how did it do? In a word, "meh". First off the positives. The car has teriffic acceleration and the waterproof servo responds perfectly. The top speed is somewhere arounf 25mph, which is nice for a RTR. Throughout all my reviews, including the rough terrain mentioned before, not one part broke. That says a great deal alone! Now for the bad. At first I had the hardest time getting the car to navigate turns well. After a few laps I decided that the tires were the culprit. They use a semi hard slick tire that just does not match up well with a real track layout. Often I would over-steer (spin in circles instead of turn) and get myself all turned around. I threw on some pro-grade RC tires and boom. Problem solved. Now the car went right where I wanted it to. If there is one reason that this is not a race ready car, it is this: the suspension system. Even after I put new tires on, the car just had a mind of its own. This car has nearly double the amount of suspension as a standard on road RC. What does that mean? When you go to make a turn the tires will turn one way, and the body will roll the other. Often this results in a roll-over which simply should not happen to on road RCs. This is the biggest flaw in the KB Edition RC. [Sumary] So the final verdict? Well, if you have never driven a real on-road RC then go for it. If you can master this, you can drive anything! However I cant really suggest this car for anyone for several reasons. First off, teh suspension is an awful and fundamental flaw in the car. You can't really fix it. Add to that the lack of tunability and you have an un-raceable RC. For the price that it would take to get this thing into useful shape you coould get a great on-road RC from several great competitors. I simply didnt see any value in this car. The one redeeming factor is that you cna turn this into any other Traxxas mini with a few extra parts. However, why not just buy one of those from the get-go?
