“Useful item”

★★★☆☆

written by walter47 on 09/02/2012

I use this sat nav about 3 times a month on average, mostly in the summer. It is very handy and I would not be without a sat nav now. Easy to use with clear screen. Never let me down. However I do think it was rather expensive for a basic model. Screen is a bit small. Also I have had problems downloading maps. Finally the battery does not seem to hold its charge very long at all. I have to run it from the power source in the car and within less than 24 hours it is dead, even after a long trip. Not a major problem but I am surprised that the manufacturer has not provided something better. From the internet I have established it is possible to change the battery but this is not simple. I could do it but will manage with it as it is for now until I can afford something better.

“This review isn't about the TomTom One device itself,...”

★★★★☆

written by M40 on 01/12/2010

This review isn't about the TomTom One device itself, which I have to say is a great piece of kit, rather it is about the map updating service offered by TomTom. I own a TomTom One, and although having purchased previous maps/updates the map within device is currently not up to date. When I connect to TomTom Home software, I am advised that new maps are avilable to purchase at a cost of £19.80 for a full year (4 updates). However, in order to obtain these updates I must first pay £19.80 to update/upgrade the current map within my device. Only then may I purchase the 4 updates. This is a true cost of £39.60 to update my current map. Scandalous! It is clearly good publicity for TomTom to advertise 4 updates at only £19.80, however they're not so keen to advise of other costs. Be aware!

I bought a TT Go 300 about two years ago ~ I am a technophobe but even I found the instructions simple . I use the TT every working day to deliver cars all over the UK and in 99% of the cases I am at the doorstep , the other 1% gets me to within certainly 50 yards . The company I work for pays for updates even though the machine is mine .
I've installed a larger SD card just to be safe for any free additions that may become available
I have no experience of other makes but I would be more than happy to stick with what I know works rather than change

The product design and specification of Tom Tom One is very good. The only mounting cradle is the suction one that fixes to the windscreen, would be good if TomTom sold a cradle for mounting on the dashboard.

Clear screen when it works, good navigation but in my experience the sound stopped working after 6 months, battery lasts about four minutes when using as standalone. unhelpful website and back-up. Not very impressed with the customer service. I won't be buying another Tom Tom and going back to something we used for over 3000 years called "a map".

Also in my opinion the design is not very good, you put the SD card in the bottom and the amount of times it's fell out (i have lost 5) so I have to use Sellotape to hold it in! I attempted to tell Tom Tom about a road near us that is actually a railway footbridge! Software seems buggy and full of glitches and doesn't seem to work on Vista without problems.

Overall, I found Tom Tom One a great device which performs pretty well. Good display, very easy to use. A great device which meets my needs perfectly (I am a Taxi driver) idiot proof. If you cant work out how to use this device you may as well give up.

Takes too long to calculate long routes ie just travelled from uk to french alps but had to calculate route in stages as tomtom was taking far too long to work total route out.
Not bad but as said takes too long to calculate long distance routes out. shame.

I thought I was getting a quality product as it was more expensive than other sat navs. I used it 10 times in 15 months without a problem then it suddenly refused to switch on. I tried all the self help tips to no avail. I am not a happy bunny.

Do not buy one! Mine stopped working after just three months. The screen was constantly flashing with a cross. Attempts to resolve with my PC just resulted in more frustration, just indicating missing files, with no advice on what to do next. Terrible website, terrible backup service.

written by daisy48 on 20/09/2008

After looking around bought TomTom One 3rd edition. At first thought it was great but then the problems crept in. Wouldn't recognise traffic master, lost post codes and finally crashed and wouldn't store map settings. Took two days to finally get support. Was sent three pages of self fix instructions. Half way down second and 6 hours later wouldn't go any further. Another list of instructions, same again, another list of instructions, same again at this point lost the plot. Told them I wanted a replacement or money back as my unit was not even 9 months old, another list of instructions. Told them no more I wanted it fixed and who has that amount of time for self fix, they have finally sent out a box for me to send it back, two weeks later. Have also discovered that it has a limited memory space and free updates will only occur about 3 times. The free updates was one of the selling points and feel cheated that I will not be able to use this. Have now bought another Brand because even when fixed I know from reviews there will always be problems.

A good product idea, let down by implementation. You need to reprogramme (almost) everything if, like me, you are an irregular user becuase of the poor battery life. 'Shortest' routes are a joke on land - you can't drive across a field! It desperately needs a better way of installation in the car that comes as standard, and doesn't require permanent disfiguration to the dashboard.

Alternative systems are better than tomtom, not the leader in navigation. Post-Code errors, house number errors and very short battery life. Customer service not helpful, alternative systems are worth a look at for the price of Tomtoms.

“In my experience, at unexpected moments the SatNav...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 22/08/2008

In my experience, at unexpected moments the SatNav holder disconnects itself from the windscreen, and the TomTom suddenly falls onto your lap, or if you are unlucky, into the driver's footwell, which is very dangerous when you are driving at speed. Also, the Tom Tom keeps directing me to go over level crossings, where I get stuck in a queue of traffic, sometimes for 20 minutes, waiting for the train to pass. It would have been quicker if the Tom Tom had programmed a route for me which avoided level crossings, even if that means driving an extra mile or so. And the maps cannot cope with finding a house in a road where there is no house number, just a house name or the name of a building. I'm thinking of upgrading to something with a better windscreen fixing. I just dont know which model to get yet.

Love the TomTom One, the upgrades and stuff on the site is awesome. The other half fell in love with it. Personally I use a Mitac Mio for hands free but looking at getting one of these for the pure ease of use and poi.

Very helpful product - worth looking into purchasing if you struggle to find people to travel with who can read maps well! Sometimes a background of the area you are travelling in can be really beneficial - doesn't always provide the "quickest" route.
