“We bought a Smeg FAB 28 Retro Fridge some three years...”

★★★☆☆

written by burnsie on 27/05/2004

We bought a Smeg FAB 28 Retro Fridge some three years ago -- within about 18 months the two shelves fitted to the door had broken -- we tried to buy replacement ones and were told it woulc cost over 70 quid with VAT, etc., what a rip off!! Didn't bother.

“Smeg FAB 28 Retro Fridge - Cost £800 lasted 13 months,...”

Smeg FAB 28 Retro Fridge - Cost £800 lasted 13 months, shop not interested as out of warranty, the manufacturer not interested, going to cost £100 plus to get a new thermostat fitted, engineer not turned up twice now, apparently will come next Tuesday at some point if he feels like it, tempted to buy a new one and just write this off....
Bought it because a friend had one and it looked great - theirs is broken too now....

“i do not believe this Smeg to be a good fridge at all...”

i do not believe this Smeg to be a good fridge at all even if it cost under £100, let alone the average £800. it has major design flaws and smeg do not seem to be interested in any complaints.

“The supplier (The Electric Shop) and the UK subsidiary...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by Tim Tyndall on 16/12/2003

The supplier (The Electric Shop) and the UK subsidiary of Smeg are not interested because the Smeg Fab 28 Retro Fridge is beyond its warranty. The door is apparently too heavy for the fridge body resulting in multiple failures. They have outsourced refrigeration repair to an independent company (which says something in itself) who, when I called, (after waiting to hear from them for 3 weeks )told me I was in a queue with 8 others awaiting a new door (at £160 plus call-out)

I'm taking this matter through the County Court small claims procedure and would be interested to hear if anyone else has had similar problems.

This fridge is fine if all you want to do is look at it, but its main function seems to be to keep food warm and its manufacturers and suppliers think this is acceptable. Don't buy one. Many of our friends have and like us deeply regret it.

I was looking to buy a smeg fab 28 fridge but once I read your review I soon changed my mind, so I would like to thank you for saving me a lot of money, which probably would have been a waste. I wish you all the best in court and hope you come out smiling. Many thanks. E Giles

Sadly I came across this review too late! I bought one 2nd hand off ebay as couldn't afford a new one. Within 24 hrs of switching it on the drips began and 1 week later they are still there..with ice formed on the back wall too. I came online to see what can fix the prob but have come across many reviews all saying the same as this one.
<br/>Shame as they are truly lovely to look at!!

On second "FAB" fridge. First one had horrendous condensation problems. 2nd not much better. Build quality is downright shoddy. Inner door trays, freezer door hinges and catch are not up to the job. This product should come with a health and wealth warning. Don't go near it. Lots of far superior fridges on the market for half the price. A fool and his money.....!!!!

My Smeg retro fridge freezer is really noisy and gurgles all the time. The floor is flat I've checked. Do you have any suggestions?
