“Slimming World - Good eating plan - meetings not so good”

★★★☆☆

written by Kirbygd335 on 14/07/2015

I started at my SW group in January 2015 with 2 stone to lose. I got very close to my target but then started to struggle. Up until then I would have praised SW (as the eating plan is good and does work if followed) but once I needed support (to lose the last bit) it was not forthcoming. I realise now that I lost weight simply because I followed the eating plan not because of anything the consultant did for me - now I need support/ advice it's become a struggle. Two weeks in a row I put on weight but the consultant did not address this at all in the meetings and she didn't bother calling/ texting me either. I went on my first holiday last month (since joining SW) again no advice was offered before I went and so I put on weight again. So I'm not bothering to go back I shall continue the plan on my own. I totally agree that it's very clicky ( if you're not on FB or don't have kids at the consultants children's school forget it), no introductions to the group when you join, not much knowledge of special dietary needs/wishes and I think that to be a consultant you don't need to be very bright or imaginative. It's a great shame as the have a good plan but the rest isn't really worth the weekly fee.

“Boring meetings, consultant uninspiring and not supportive”

★★☆☆☆

written by northern lass on 23/05/2015

I have lost weight in the past with Weightwatchers, but I've let things slip and put a stone back on. I joined SW this time only because I've moved house and there isn't a convenient WW meeting. I have to admit I only went to SW meetings for a few weeks before I decided it wasn't for me. The eating plan makes sense, and there are certainly lots of things that are 'free food', however, there is little scope for 'treats' as everything that makes life pleasurable (eg chocolate, cheese, wine) has a lot of Syn values. Exercise is not taken into account at all and seems to have little mention, at least at the meeting I attended. There were five new members the week I joined, we had an introductory talk with the consultant in a separate room to the main meeting, we were then taken into the very crowded meeting room and sat down to await the 'image therapy' session. We weren't introduced, and no-one spoke to us. I''m quite an outgoing person and over the next few weeks I persevered but never felt part of the group, which I thought was rather a 'clique', lots of people who had obviously been going there for ages and knew each other well but had little interest in making new members feel at home. I didn't feel comfortable and found the meeting very tedious and extremely long, as we had to 'celebrate' every weight loss, however small. The consultant was very young - not a problem in itself, but I don't think she was very experienced, I found her boring and uninspiring. She sent a ridiculous number of lengthy group texts in between meetings but I got no support from her, she didn't seem interested in my progress and In fact didn't speak to me at all after the first meeting so in the end I decided to stop going to meetings. I've de died it really isn't worth spending 4.95 a week to step onto someone else's scales and waste an hour of my life at a boring meeting. I emailed the consultant And saidI I wasn't going to attend any more, but she didn't reply, which I thought was strange - surely she should at least have wanted to know why I've left? I'm sure there are good SW meetings out there but this isn't one of them.

“Experience depends on the quality of the consultant”

★★★★★

written by Frazierhz1953 on 29/04/2015

Having struggled with my weight for a most of my adult life, I finally gave in and joined Slimming World. My first experience was a disaster - a very poor quality consultant who made the experience very unpleasant! That was it - No more Slimming world for me. Until I was persuaded to try another group. What a difference! The group leader was far more relaxed and helpful. She really does her best to help everyone in the group achieve their weight loss goals. The plan is easy to follow. You can eat as much 'free' food as you like (Meat, potatoes, pasta, rice, fish, most fat free dairy, pulses and vegetables) with the emphasis on 'filling up' on fruit and vegetables and restricting the amount of processed, fatty and sugary foods you eat. The plan also allows you a certain amount of points called syns for treats and extras. Included in the plan is Body Magic - designed to get you looking at exercise in a different way. Dancing round the kitchen to your favourite tune? Body Magic. It really encourages you to look at all activity as beneficial to your health. I am never hungry, my hair and skin look better than they have in years and I'm much fitter than I was. I have lost 2.5 stone in 14 weeks just by following the plan. Yes, there are still moaning minnies who don't follow it properly and whine when they don't lose weight, and yes, the information handed out can get a bit repetitive, but there are new members who join every week - they won't know what was said last week, or last month... But get past that and you have a fab plan that actually works! For the first time I feel that I can reach a healthy weight and maintain it. Give it all you have, follow it to the letter and you will lose weight :-)

“Slimming World - Quick results that stay 23.4 15”

★★★★★

written by Stillsweetinside on 23/04/2015

I put on monster weight after quitting the smokes. I went from a size 12 - 16 in a very small amount of time and it scared me. I stopped going out and got caught with the usual trap of eating my pain ect. My sister got me into Slimming world and I wasn't sure about it. I had never been in any diet plan before and didn't know if I had it in me. I didn't think I would take it seriously at all but it was so easy it all just started happening. The truth is that Slimming World is not really a diet. it is a group of people that get together and try to do the same thing - eat sensibly. It is a common sense way to look at food without having to count or pay too much attention to the food you are eating. The only think I ever had to watch out for is how many syns I was putting inside me and that is as complex as it is in my life. You only have to make sure you don't stuff your face with silly foods. You get tonnes of information, online and a few booklets that give you a list of everything that need to get you started. If you want it hard enough you will lose weight very easily. Speed foods have been amazing and I am eating so many of them that I don't know how I fit them all in. I love soups now and I throw barrels of solid veg into it, such as peas, spuds and carrots. I eat barrels of it and lose at least 2pounds a week. Yogurt and berries and making life much easier now and pure heaven. Working out helps speed everything up as well as green tea (never drink that on an empty stomach omg) which speeds it up even more. You wont lose weight if you don't go to meetings, pay your fee and face the scales. Sure you will lose weight if you stop eating syned foods but you will just lose interest and the weight will go back on. One thing I have found that really helps me to keep the weight off is to get rid of the scales in my house so that I don't know what weight I am. This makes me super careful and makes me work that little bit harder before facing the scales each week. By work I mean just not having that shot of whiskey at the weekend or walking a little bit faster. You can save syns for weekends but you have to be good during the week. The weight is just falling off me now its amazing. Its really easy to lose weight with Slimming World. People tell me I am just disappearing before them HA. I have found that slimming world is more about common sense instead of worrying about how much everything will add up to. True you have the syn system that you can calculate but I honestly don't pay too much attention to that. You have to live and you can use 15 syns a day so you are not clawing at the walls wanting chocolate, by all means each chocolate just not truck load of it. Each bar has different amounts of syns but you get all this information in the joiner booklet and online too. If I go over my syns (15 max a day)I just work out a little bit more that week or take the stairs instead of the elevator. A formula like this will change the way you feel about how you treat your own body instead of just what you are putting in it. Once the weight starts to come off you will want to lose even more, work out more, eat better, look better, feel better. By cutting out the booze and sugar foods I lost a pound and a half every week just by doing that. No working out, nothing. It was very eye opening. I have only been to slimming world for 8 weeks and I have lost just under a stone. I can feel the muscles in my back now and my legs are like rocks. I am so happy with myself but I have stepped up on the workouts, I love to work out now and I am always pushing myself harder each time. I am not out of my size 16 yet because I have an unusually shaped stomach but I am glad for this as I can t afford an entire new set of clothes. But im saving up for that new wardrobe believe me. It will be short skirts and shirts not baggy t-shirts and tracksuit bottoms. I will look hot this summer, I know it. I know this because that is what I want and I will get it. I am sure I will quit slimming world when I get to 10 stone but I am considering joining the support team in my group as they have helped me so much with their crazy banter and feel good buzz. Without the group there would just be me and I don't think I would have done this without the support. anyone considering slimming world should give it at least 2-3 weeks and see how they get on. It is hard to wrap your head around the planning, shopping ect but once you find your feet nothing will ever stop you and it will all start to happen. Don't be afraid of changing the food you eat, I was terrified at first but never looked back when I switched and believe me I was awful when it came to food. I used to eat like a child, never tried anything I wasn't used to ect. Now I have a list of foods that are good for me and stuff my face with speed foods. It has changed my life and I would highly recommend it.

“Great way of eating, but groups are not that great”

★★★★☆

written by Brit2015 on 23/03/2015

Slimming World diet is certainly a way of eating which you could do for life. It is flexible enough for family life and it does teach you about healthy eating. There is a long list of foods which you can eat and you can certainly make some very tasty meals from this extensive list. You do have to cook from scratch, which I believe isn't a bad thing. Unfortunately it doesn't teach you about portion control - that bit you will have to do yourself. If, like me, you have a huge appetite, this could be the downfall of the diet! My personal experience of meetings get a great big thumbs down. The impression I got was that my consultant was only interested in taking money, there was no support whatsoever. I submitted my diary for four weeks running and not once did I get any feedback, good or bad. I suspect she didn't even read it. On the occasions I texted her with a question I never received a reply EVER, so rude! The whole meeting was taken up of sitting in a big circle and the consultant went round one by one and said how much weight we had lost (and hadn't lost) and then we had to give a little speech about our week - so if you are not into being the centre of attention with all eyes on you, then don't go to a meeting! Image therapy? What was that?? We never covered it. I left the group and never went back - even then I never received a text or a message of support to see how I was doing - I paid 10 weeks in advance so the consultant was happy and didn't care either way. I have now joined on line. The website is okay(ish) but compared to the other big diet companies it is nowhere near as good, I don't personally find it very intuitiative and I struggle to navigate because placement of syn calculators, food diaries are not in obvious places. It does have an online chat with a helper which is really good as they are ready to answer a question if need be. The phone app is absolutely rubbish. It hardly ever finds a food that you want or it brings up a completely random item which is nothing like you searched for! The app gives you nowhere to enter your food diary on the move. To make matters worse the app is hit and miss whether or not it works when you are not using Wifi. I have a 4g iphone and it often says I am not connected to the internet (which I am) and will not allow me to access the food syn search - most frustrating. All in all, I would recommend Slimming Word as a diet, but not the meetings. Join forums on the internet, there are plenty out there to choose from and you will be able to get all the support you need without shelling out the astronomical membership fees. You can usually find syn values on the internet and if you are in a good forum people are kind enough to look them up for you.

“Online is useless”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Haynesig99 on 17/02/2015

I have recently attended groups and decided to change to online due to time constraints. As many of us now use mobile devices I downloaded their app, however this doesn't link with your food diary and this is acceded via the main website which on mobile device is then glitchy! Downside is once you have signed up a realise this you don't get a refund so are stuck out of pocket for 3 months - if you have all the time in the world and access all day every day to a pc then go for it !

“lack of support”

★★☆☆☆

written by ElizaReynolds245 on 30/01/2015

I agree with other reviewers, the diet is good but the standard of support is variable. I didnot get a new members introduction, so I was left struggling to understand the terms EE and SP I only lost 3.5 lbs in 5 weeks and I thought Iwas sticking to the diet, I submitted 5 food diaries and only got 1 back with a comment which didnt help, and that was only after numerous texts to the consultant. I was really didisappointed that an experience which could have been so positive to me left me feeling negative and very unhappy. I am trying to get a refund as I paid in advance, I still am undecided whether I should try a different group.

“good plan, poor groups”

★★☆☆☆

written by izMason158 on 08/01/2015

The plan is good and does work, sadly the quality of consultants and groups varies enormously. Going round the room discussing weight losses is a great idea in principle but as a group member it is usually extremely boring and after a couple of weeks you never learn anything new because the same old information is repeated. Myself, my daughter and niece have therefore decided to continue following the plan ourselves. We have invested in a good pair of scales and three money boxes in which we put our £5 per week. We love the chance to get together over a cup of tea and a chat and so far the results are much better than attending group. We do discuss recipes, what's gone well and what has hindered but our support for eachother is the key. Slimming World it is time to review your consultants performance (they all try very much harder when they are having a visit)and the format of meetings IMAGE therapy is BORING!

Totally agree with this comment. I went to a group and it was boring with a capital B. The whole meeting was taken up going round the group stating how much weight (or not) they had lost. Learned nothing and the consultant was useless. No feedback on my diary which is submitted religiously for four weeks. She was totally disinterested. I left the group.

“Great eating plan”

★★★★★

written by 134Hamilton on 17/08/2014

I have been a member of Slimming World for 8 weeks and have lost 12lbs. I find the food plan easy to follow with lots of flexibility. I enjoy cooking and there are lots of great recipes on-line and in the magazines. Eating free food snacks, e.g. banana, 0% yogurt, between meals means I am never hungry. It's a food strategy for life rather than a "diet" so teaches your body to enjoy a healthy and balanced way of eating. My group and its leader are all very friendly and supportive.

“Pay to weigh and listen to other people talk on and on...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 11/07/2014

After my third and last attempt to get into the swing of Slimming World I decided that these groups are only as good as the consultants running them and I was not willing to spend any more money trying to find a group that worked for me. It is okay for the critics of those who dare to complain about SW to come on here and say 'just try another group' but each time you do it costs you more money, probably more miles in petrol and you have to beat that 'back to square one' feeling you get each time you restart. I found the same issues with the three groups I attended - three in the space of a year. The newbie talk was rushed. The meetings were overcrowded to the point where it was usual to stand in a queue for almost 30 minutes waiting to be weighed. There was no way around it either no matter which time I arrived; if I arrived early for weigh-in I then had to wait almost 45 mins for the rest of the weigh-in to be completed and for the class to begin. If you arrive later you risked being told to wait until after the class - but you have pay before you sit down though. Coffee is available during the weigh-in but trying to relax and enjoy a steaming cup of coffee in a flimsy plastic cup with toddlers running wild around you was a nightmare and a safety hazard. The meetings were more like a mothers group than a serious slimming group and I felt a more professional approach should apply when you are paying money to attend these things and find yourself surrounded by babies and toddlers who cannot stay quiet. I am a mother too by the way! Image Therapy...hello? just what does this mean exactly? the consultant goes around each person reading their names off a list in the order each person weighed in announcing their gain or loss and how long you get to speak depends on how 'in' you are with the consultant. A common complaint I understand. Also, if you weighed in early you get your weight read out early - great - but then have to sit for over an hour listening to other peoples results - if you weighed in late you have to sit for over an hour waiting your turn. The consultants had their favourites, they all seem to, and some women held the floor for ages going into great detail about what they did and ate on their holidays - other women including myself got our weights read out to feeble applause and then our personal 'therapy' consisted of 'Are you set for the week then? good!'...and onto the next person. I never learned any recipes - I guess they want you to buy their books - no suggestions for how to make the most of food allowances, just reading out weights, laughing and chatting (with the clique) and then 'Have a successful week!' and it's over! the consultant is then busy weighing in the newbies and get packed up so I as never able to speak to them personally. I got no phonecalls to check up in my first weeks at each of the groups and one consultant only favoured Facebook as her point of contact and when anyone asked her a question she'd say 'Im going to throw this one out to the group... can anyone answer this?' if not that then just photo after photo of plates of food people were about to eat. The eating plan is basically high protein-low carb. The recommended wholemeal bread, Hovis Nimble, is thin as paper and not at all satisfying so I preferred to go without altogether. Portion control is not part of the ethos and I think portion control has to come into it somewhere as eating is largely behavioral. I dont agree that you can or should eat as much potato and pasta as you like and I have seen people not lose weight week after week by taking this literally. You'd think you could eat as much fruit as you like - you cannot - some have to be strictly limited, the 'superspeed' fruits simply make you go to the loo. 'Fill up your plate with free foods' is fine so long as you can stomach endless amounts all day every day of baked beans, tinned tomatoes, salad veg, eggs, tinned tuna, capers, muller light yogs. You get bored with these 'empty' foods that don't fill you up and you are not learning how to control your portions by piling your plates high as they say. The only way to stay feeling full is to eat loads of the lean meats but who wants to eat meat all the time? I noted that people lost large amounts of weight, I also know people who lost loads of weight with SW only to put it all back on again once they stopped attending because portion control never figured in the eating plan. I now follow the heart foundation's eating plan and have lost 2 stone in the past 3 months and I can eat bread during the day - proper bread too - and I can take more milk daily which is something that is severely restricted on SW (only 1/3 of a cup?) and for women this is not appropriate as they need calcium. My days are not focused on 'filling my plate high' with anything as what I now eat fills me enough to not need to do that. I know some will be offended by this critique but basically SW is a money making organisation when you come down to it - I know people do lose weight with SW but the most important thing it taught me is that it does not cost money to lose weight and you don't need to be reduced to being a number on a plastic card to feel like you are doing something worthwhile.

“Don't think you cn lose weight? Yes you can for sure!!”

written by Conradcv81 on 23/04/2014

I joined Slimming World just over a year ago and collected my 6st loss award. I'm amazed! Battled with my weight for many many years, the gains started with an undiagnosed under active thyroid, even on medication I struggled to lose weight, always lost some then gained back with extra. I had a leaflet for Slimming World come through my door and thought why not? Best decision I ever made. Don't be embarrassed to go on your own, I went alone. Everyone in group is in the same position as you, even the slimmer members were overweight at the start. Your soon get chatting to others about their journeys, collecting tips and ideas on food, as well as information from the groups consultant. Cost is reasonable, throughout your weight loss journey to will be given sticker, certificates or both as you reach half stone milestones. I love this factor as, for me, it gave me incentive to go for the next one. There is also slimmer of the week, and month, as well as yearly awards up for grabs. I for one never thought I'd get this far, with an 84lb goal to lose. I am now going for an extra 7lbs off. You set your own goal, mine was a size 18 (started at 24/26) 5ft 6 tall. Wasn't looking to be a size 12 but every ones different. I say give it a go ... if you aren't losing what you want then chat to your consultant, maybe the timing is just not right for you. You have to be in the right frame of mind ... good luck to all xx

“It works”

★★★★☆

written by Gaugex194 on 18/04/2014

Following the plan, and that means completely sticking to it works, full stop. Its the only diet I've stuck to and lost weight. However, the problem is sticking to it. The first few weeks you I lost on average a pound a week, I have about a stone to lose. I felt amazing, but then you get complacent and it gets boring and then you lose interest. The group is also a waste of time, in my opinion its just a social club for a load of retired women. I just go get weighed and then I'm off but if you stick to the plan it works!

“Worst eating plan ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DanielleSimmons1951 on 01/04/2014

I tried Slimming World and could not believe the size of the Leader. She was extremely abuse. Now we all go to slimming clubs to lose weight and are a bit on the large size ourselves. However this women who stood at the front of the group was so overweight and has been running Slimming World groups for 18 years. Alarm bells should have rang. Long story short I wasted my money and did not feel healthy with the plan. I have lost 2 stone through healthy eating and exercise which has taken ages and I think Slimming World preys on people wanting a quick fix.

So you blame the plan for an awful consultant? I have lost over 3 stone with Slimming World, haven't been on the plan for half a year because I wanted a break, and have kept it off. My consultant is rubbish and that's why I am rejoining to a different group as I still have more to lose. What does an overweight consultant have to do with the plan? Obviously she stopped following it and put the weight back on, she should be reported to headquarters.

“Patronising, humiliating and embarrassing”

★★☆☆☆

written by Savanna1991 on 05/03/2014

I joined SW for the second time just after Christmas, having lost almost 5 stone following the plan several years ago so I know it works. Maybe it is the consultant at my group, but I felt patronised, humiliated and embarrassed every time I attended. In the end, despite having paid for 12 weeks, I only actually attended 6 sessions as I couldn't put myself through this awful experience anymore. I have however, followed the diet myself at home and have now lost my first stone. To be honest I think SW need to look at training their consultants to be more sympathetic and understanding and not just standing at the front of the room reading out everyones losses or gains. With hindsight, I wish I had saved myself the £49.50.

You should report them to Slimming World Headquarters. They re-train consultants who aren't doing their job properly. My consultant is like this, that's why I have moved to a new group.

I'd tried Slimming World in the past without much sucess but encourged by 3 workmates who had all lost several stones on this diet i decided to give it another go. There are 3 diets to choose from - Red, Green and Extra Easy (which is coloured orange in the book) The consultants push for you to do the Extra Easy plan. Lean meat, fruit and veg are free food, breads and cearals classed as healthy extra's and other things such as mayo, sauces are given a Syn value. Everything has to be cooked from scratch, so this means spending a lot of time preparing things in the kitchen. You have to be very organised. This can prove a drawback if you work full time. If you havent planned your meal you could be in trouble. I followed the diet carefully for 3 weeks (these 3 weeks also included a week off from work so i had time to plan and prepare). Disapointingly, i didnt lose any weight and actually ended up heavier than when i started. In short, if you have the time and you are imaginative in the kitchen give it a go, many people are very sucessful on it. Unfortunatly, it doesnt work work for every one. I have now switched to Weight Watchers and have already lost 3lb in my 1st week.

Two weeks at slimmers world and have not lost one ounce, even though they say my food diary is perfect. Does anyone have any ideas why?

Although they say you can eat as much as you like (providing it is free food) you still have to have portion control to a degree. Could it be you are eating too much? Or perhaps too much fruit as things like grapes, apples (and much more) have lots of natural sugar.

I have to admit to being a complete fan of Slimming World! I lost my excess weight (five and a half stone), and for the first time ever have kept it off with ease. I'm so pleased that I joined - life changing! However, I really don't think that you should search for the answer to your question on here, but go to someone qualifed, i.e your GP or possibly the consultant at a Slimming World club. If you are then given the go ahead to lose weight the Slimming World way (and I can see no reason why not!), then may I wish you the very best of luck! Stick with it, I found the first three weeks the hardest, then it seemed to 'click' and I never looked back!!
