“During design and whilst signing financial paperwork,...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/02/2011

During design and whilst signing financial paperwork, sales chap couldn't be more helpful, told us if we wanted best men to fit it we would have to wait 6 months, this didn't worry us as it was our new house & we hadn't moved in yet, when fitter arrived, he'd only been told day before and was a sub contractor, so much for best fitters.

Under unit lights don't work, handles keep dropping off as screws used are too short and door colours were wrong. Contacted them by phone and letter, we were given new light for units that worked for all of 2 weeks, we were given a bag of screws to fix handles ourselves, door handles are still dropping off 5 years later, door colours have never been changed and we were advised that this is due to them being natural wood and it was a natural flaw.

Would never waste such a vast amount of money on the kitchen of my dreams with Magnet again.

“We are not and never have been happy in anyway what so...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/12/2010

We are not and never have been happy in anyway what so ever with the service that we have received from Magnet Guernsey.

This includes the standard of personal service, starting with the design of the kitchen by the Guernsey office, the level of service we have received from our constant calls to the Guernsey office requesting assistance from any senior member of staff in sorting out our issues and most of all the utter disrespect of the fitters that they employed in the fitting of our kitchen.

We were constantly having to chase them for progress, however they were very quick to take our money, and we are totally dissatisfied and utterly disgraced at the service of workmanship by all the fitters that they have employed to come into our home and make our life hell. We call the Guernsey office to be told, "no-one can make decisions", "the Guernsey office doesn't have a manager", a manger who arrived from England, say's "he's not allowed to make decisions".

We had to order eplacement pieces of our kitchen arrived and a fitter attend at our home to replace the doors, and the fridge and sort out some of the problems. We weren't unhappy with the fitter himself, this being the 3rd fitter we have had, however it was utterly clear to us that he was sent to try and make an already botched job look a bit better, not to put right the underlying issues!

The following day the fitter attend to continue with the work, however it was clear to us that the kitchen was still not going to be fitted to a standard that we were not happy with. We discussed this with the fitter, and his attitude was "that is how it is", he couldn't put it right, the whole kitchen has been fitted wrongly, fixing one thing, only highlights the next thing.

Realising that things were not getting better and with the fitter still at our home I called the Guernsey office and asked for a manager to come and have a look at our issues while the fitter was here, but for what ever reason they were not prepared to come to assist us with matter, utterly disgraceful. Guernsey is a small place and to get anywhere is a 10 minute drive.

The fitter left our home that day leaving an absolute mess in our home. The fridge was left in the middle of our dining room along with all the packaging from the new one, why? The unit doors were left in my garage, why? An no indication of when he was returning.

The following day, it was my wife's birthday and we were having friends around for the afternoon. At 1.30pm the fitter arrived to 'finish off' what he had started. We were unaware the fitter was returning that day. Without a return call from the Guernsey office stating that someone would attend at our home to look at the issues or even a phone call, and because we had friends around, we asked the fitter to leave.

That afternoon I sort legal advice. Our advise was to request an independent fitter attend our home and look at the standard of the fitting.

The independent fitter was extremely concerned, his main point and imminent concern is that the oven and microwave were still not screwed to the wall or units which is extremely dangerous! The base units are screwed to the wall, the plinth's have all been cut at the wrong angles, the wall units are not level, the list goes on. We have a 4 year old daughter living in this unsafe environment and we have finally had enough of being messed around and excuses.

The whole kitchen needs to come out and a capable fitter needs to spend more than a day refitting and replacing.

My wife is 6 months pregnant and recovering from a serious illness, all this stress and anxiety is causing us both unnecessary stress.

This has been going on since July, 2010, we didn't think it would be unreasonable to have hoped for our kitchen to have been ready in time for christmas, but no, you have spoiled that as well.

As I have stated above, we have sort legal advice and are prepared to take this matter to the litigation court if necessary.

“I was worried about getting a kitchen from Magnet...”

★★★★★

written by on 24/11/2010

I was worried about getting a kitchen from Magnet because of the reviews on this site. I am now wondering whether all of the reviews are genuine and not by rival kitchen companies i.e. giving glorious reviews for their kitchens and slagging off others. The reason I decided to go ahead with a kitchen from Magnet was because local fitters in my town had advised me that they were of a high standard, but a little pricey. After walking in the extremely posh showroom I was concerned that the price would be way above my budget, however, they were very flexible on price and I was very pleased with the price quoted. The price I was quoted was 600 pounds more than B&Q, however, as the cabinets are delivered ready assembled (not flat packed) and include soft closing doors and cupboards I thought it was worth paying the extra money. The quote given was a lot cheaper than Howdens who also had been recommended. I did not use Magnet's fitters so cannot comment on this but am extremely pleased with my high gloss white cabinets, Hotpoint double stainless steel oven, hob and integrated dishwasher and would certainly recommend them to others.

I think the main difference for you has been that you did not use Magnet fitters. I have left a 'one star' review today and I can assure you I do not work for a rival company. The rudeness of the fitter we had to endure was jaw dropping and an independent electrician told us we could easily have had a fire because of the botched electrical work. I am pleased that you had a good experience, because it means one less person who had to endure what we went through.

“Be very careful before you decide on a fitted kitchen...”

written by Eric H on 20/11/2010

Be very careful before you decide on a fitted kitchen from Magnet. It took six months to achieve a kitchen that remotely resembles the product that I expected. I am now trying to get some compensation. Poor fitting (they sub-contract), poor quality control (it's up to you to complain) and utterly disgraceful customer service. The key to the whole process is the fitters, I would not ask them to tell me the time, they would get it wrong. They have a fundemental problem in being able to honestly assess their work ie they cannot. The message throughout the whole process was WE DON'T CARE. Take my advice and go somewhere else. The M in Magnet stands for MEDIOCRE.

I thought i was the only person that had problems with magnets untill i stumbled upon this site,, i wish i never went to magnet probally would of had a better quality of service with b&q, the coventry branch are a sham, they have turned my dream kitchen into a nightmare,,they sent a fitter round who was rude so we canceled are kitchen completly then was phoned up to be told 'dont cancel still have the kitchen but use your own fitters, we will still work with you and your fitters to make sure the kitchen runs smoothly' so we thought ok we will play it this way, wish we had kept the kitchen canceled! they were so lovely and helpfull untill they recieved the payment,, once the kitchen had been delivered my fitters discovered the plans were all wrong so had to redesign the kitchen then there were wrong handels, missing cuboard witch we then had to pay extra for as we were told it is not on the plan they had done and maybe are fitters are stupid and have no idea how to fit a kitchen which we replied they are following your plan!!! we are constantly trying to resolve all of this as the kitchen is still not finished but no one is ever there available to speak to and they never never phone back to our request and amazingly the manager of the store is never there or is he? to top it all of we payed to have granite worktops and yet again more mistakes which is very dissapointing (the tops are beautifull) but unfortunately we are missing one worktop due to magnets canceling the cutouts and drainer groves we payed for at the begining, no fault of the granite people to be fair they are lovely, so 4 weeks on and we still have no sink with three young children it is not easy, all i can say is think very wisely before entering any magnet showroom and being blagged into a dream kitchen because let me tell you now it is far from that, it is painfull, stressfull, disapointing, heartbreaking and me and my husband have had enough, we have spoke to trading standards so hopefully this gets resolved!!!!!!!!

“The customer service at the Cribbs Causeway, Bristol...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Mary Williams on 18/08/2010

The customer service at the Cribbs Causeway, Bristol branch was appalling. Although we are pleased overall with the product, it was incredibly hard work to get to that point. Non-communication was their speciality; phone calls were not returned as promised. When it came to finalising the details "to ensure that we are completely happy" the salesman (because that's what they really are) simply ticked off the items that had been listed at the first visit to give us an idea of cost, without any consultation. Items were not ordered; the manager had to deliver the handles as they had not been ordered and although knowing that we were extremely dissatisfied, just walked in, handed them to the fitter with a grunt and completely ignored me! BUT, Rich the fitter was amazing!

Magnet were extremely helpful up until they took our money then everything went down hill. The kitchen is lovely the fitter average but Truro Branch in Cornwall is a nightmare. Phone calls not returned - staff never available - noone ever has explanations as to why kitchen has so far taken 9 weeks and counting to finish when should have taken 1 1/2 days!!!! Magnet really need to get their act together. Customer service is non-existent and scores -10 out of 10 with us!!!!!!!! By the way still waiting for kitchen to be finished. Think twice before ordering kitchen from these people.

Never again would I ever buy anything from Magnet Kitchens or encourage anyone else to purchase from them. Our small kitchen was updated with a new kitchen in December and today 7 months on it is still not finished. Issues included kitchen doors not fitting properly, damaged goods, also a very small sink was fitted instead of the one requested.

“Ok people this is what you get from a Magnet purchase : ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 14/06/2010

Ok people this is what you get from a Magnet purchase :

Pre assembled units/carcasses, which is also available from Howdens, the real difference is that when you have the wrong door/carcass etc, you can actually go back to Howdens the same day and exchange it for the right one and receive an apology for the mistake.

Appliances are no different to those available elsewhere except you will pay extra because you 'get' the '5 year' warranty which is actually from the manufacturer themselves not Magnet. Those who have had appliances from Magnet will vouch that you have to phone the relevant company yourself found on the information that comes with the appliance.

Installation : This is usually carried out by a local 'craftsman', or someone who has some tools! The associated works, although sold by Magnet, are left to the 'craftsman' to arrange. So you have just paid for example £100:00 for a £40:00 electric socket installation.
Also the sale of a Gas certificate, £100.00 for a £40.00 certicate. If you a gas appliance installed then yes you need a certificate but what I have experienced on a few occassions is the sale of a certificate for housing a boiler situated in the kitchen. This is not a requirement by any means and any housing to a boiler must adhere to the manufacturers instructions, I rang Corgi (now Gas Safe) after a difference of opinion concerning this with the branch manager and was informed that because there are so many boiler companies with so many different models it would be impossible to set a standard across the board. The response from Corgi at the time was 'As long as the gas supply has not been touched or tampered with then a gas certificate is not needed'. The branch manager refused to accept this and insisted it was Magnet policy, (although I couldn't find it in the installation/rule manual given to fitters) and not the £'s profit made on the sale, make your own mind up.

The aftersales service : What you must remember is that all Magnet did was sell you materials and some baloney about how brilliant they are. From the moment the installer surveys your kitchen all the problems, with the exception of delivery, become his. The fitting, gas, electrics, removal of waste and the certification are all down to the guy who installs your overpriced kitchen to arrange.
This is why it can take so long for remedial work to be completed the guy is on other jobs, Magnet do not have a service engineer.

Magnet are no more than a 'middle man' company.

You read this probably thinking I have a problem with my kitchen but no They didn't fit my kitchen, I used to fit on their behalf.

If you really want a quality kitchen installation go to your nearest Howdens grab some business cards left by local fitters and shop around also ask your friends who fit their kitchen if you like the finish.

REMEMBER THE LOCAL GUY HAS A FAMILY AND A MORTGAGE TO KEEP ... AND A REPUTATION TO UPHOLD.
Granted you get some dodgy ones out there but do your homework and you should be ok.

In todays world you should know that when you hand over 100% of the money you have less chance of getting the result you want ...

IF ANY COMPANY REFUSE TO LET YOU KEEP A RETENTION .... WALK AWAY

DO REMEMBER THAT COMPANIES LIKE MAGNET HAVE DEALT WITH MANY CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS OVER MANY YEARS.
DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY LOSE ANY SLEEP AT NIGHT ? ... NO CHANCE THEY'RE DREAMING OF WHAT TO SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED CASH ON.

Im a small kitchen supplier and 100% agree of what you say about these larger companies. It isnt about what they have sold you its about a figure on there paperwork. I worked for Moben for 10 yrs as a rep and is all the same - got your money then the dust from there shoes is in your eyes.
I do find though as a fitter you would recomend Howdens....They may supply pre-built but the quality is so not there. Same with any product - you can buy a ford or an audi - both drive so why is one more than the other....?Quality...!
I supply high end kitchens and always get compared and priced against Howdens, esp from new build clients due to builders recommondations(yet no builders would fit in there own house). I find it insulting!
My mum had a Howdens kitchen fitted......y you ask, as i have my own company?
Plain and simple - it was free and she's a council tenent...kinda says it all really.

written by on 17/05/2010

I had my kitchen installed by Magnet Kitchens (Wigmore Street branch). I was initially impressed by the products on display in their showroom and by the time frame they offered for the work. However, once the work commenced, I was disappointed with their poor communication. Not only did they never let me know what was happening, but they didn't ring back when I called to ask. When finished, the tap was faulty and was leaking steadily (costly and a waste of water). Again, they couldn't tell me when it would be fixed and it took over two weeks from the time I complained to have someone come. Staff were at best indifferent at worst plain rude. I would advise against using Magnet for your new kitchen!

I am extremley disappointed to hear that you purchased a kitchen from Magnet (wigmore Street) and had a frigtful experience. I recently had a kitchen fitted from the very same branch and all staff including installers were fantastic. Yes there were some dealys and damages but the staff could not do enough to help me. I have and would recommend and have recommended them to several friends.
Too many people are quick to comment or review when things go wrong but never take the time to say how good someone is when they do a good job. You are most probably one customer out of the hundreds that they deal with, so you have been unlucky, but anyone thinking of buying a kitchen visit Wigmore Street and I'm sure the staff will make you feel confident that your in the right place.

“We visited Magnet Barnstaple in November 2009 and...”

★★☆☆☆

written by LenJ on 16/05/2010

We visited Magnet Barnstaple in November 2009 and asked for a kitchen to be designed. Nothing was too much trouble and the answer to every question was yes, no problem.

They messed the installation date up, which meant the installation ended up being stretched each side of Xmas and New Year. The time I took off over the Xmas period to do the tiling was wasted because it could not be done until the worktop went in. The worktop was arranged for Xmas Eve but a phone call was not made by Magnet, and so it was not booked. It was eventually done on Jan 8th. Although we had a cheap worktop top while we were waiting, nothing could be put away till the new one was fitted.

The kitchen was supposed to be checked off at Magnet before delivery but we had extra bits and missing bits.
The fitter who measured the kitchen up failed to notice that the waste pipe needed moving (The waste pipe was half a days work as our walls are almost 3 feet thick), and also failed to notice our kitchen is not really high enough for this particular fitted kitchen. . The result is the cupboards are much lower to the worktop than they should be.
An electrician was booked by the fitters but he chose to work at the new McDonald's in Barnstaple rather then turn up at our house when arranged (He then let us down for a second and third time). Magnet promised that an electrician would come out that day even if they had to pay extra, but it never happened.
We were lucky that the fitter who was actually sent out to fit the kitchen was a total perfectionist and the standard of work was very high. This was not the same who fitter did the measuring up.

The worktop was overpriced in the shop but they failed to tell us. It was only the worktop people who alerted us to this point. If we hadn't followed this up we would have been taken for £400. The plug for the sink took until March to get after endless phone calls with no call backs.

Almost every time we called the store nobody was available and calls were never returned. For a £12,000 kitchen all they were going to offer for compensation was £250, they even tried to put the overpayment of the worktop as part of the compensation offered! We finally managed to get £600, but considering that every dated promised was missed and the kitchen cupboards are too low over the worktops I am not impressed.

Although the product is pretty good, I would not recommend Magnet as they cannot survey a kitchen on site, you are at the mercy of third-party workmen, once they have your money, a don't give a damn attitude is the norm, and they say yes to everything regardless or whether they can follow it up or not.

There is no way you can get suitable compensation for any of this, as even if you take it to the ombudsman the is most likely extremely low. I get the impression that I was very lucky to get away with £600.

Company's that mess you about to this extent are not likely to mend their ways unless they are hit hard in the pocket.
In future I will get a hand built kitchen as it is not much more expensive and they don't run their company's like Magnet do.

“Ordered a kitchen from Magnet Norwich and very pleased...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 09/05/2010

Ordered a kitchen from Magnet Norwich and very pleased with the quality of the units and excellent workmanship of the fitters - so far. The problem is that Magnet do not seem to have contingency plans when things go wrong. The units were delivered on April 1st with a completion date of 19th April. The existing kitchen was ripped out on April 5th and partial cooking facilities were not restored until 24th April. The kitchen is still not fully fitted and we have been given a new, tentative completion date of 28th May. The cause: delays in delivery and fitting, faults in original planning, not ordering essential items. The problem: inept project planning and poor customer relations: "It's out of our control" and "I was going to ring you" are set phrases I am getting bored with. If things go well then great, if not then hell. Once they have your money that's it. With plenty of kitchen suppliers on the market why gamble?

“Magnet Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. ”

★★★☆☆

written by on 04/05/2010

Magnet Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

We thought we'd treat ourselves to a new kitchen. We looked at various suppliers, and Magnet seemed ok.
Kitchen is really lovely, really pleased with it. The fitter was very good also. He was always on time, he cleaned up every day, and he got the job done in the time expected.
The salesman/designer was helpful too.
The store manager was useless and the other sales person/designer wasn't the most helpful when our designer went into hospital. She really didn't want to help out with his customers.
We never received our insurance letter, which is supposed to cover our payment. We still haven't had our home visit to check installation, and we haven't received our guarantee.
Would I recommend Magnet in Bury St Edmunds? To be honest - No. The kitchen is really nice, but the staff are pretty useless. You have to do all the work chasing for things.

“Recently had a kitchen fitted from Magnet and we are...”

★★★★★

written by on 23/04/2010

Recently had a kitchen fitted from Magnet and we are thrilled with everything to be honest with you.

I actually read all the bad reveiws of Magnet but I'm so glad I took the chance now. I have written a really long review because not enough people who have had good experiences actually write about it.

It took us a while to work out exactly what we wanted because it's not something you can rush into and decide on everything within a week or so.

We kept going back to the showroom and the staff were so helpful. They didn't have our kitchen on display so our designer found out which was the closest Magnet branch that did have it on display so we could see the 'full kitchen'.

The designer measured up but took quite a few details down first including a budget. This was the only thing I was unsure of as we haven't bought a new kitchen for 10years and didn't know what they cost now! We don't have a massive kitchen but it's not small either. The designer gave us a quick quote to give us a ball park figure and that was about £10k fitted. The total cost in the end was about £8.5k but we got our tiling done by a friend.

The designer went through EVERYTHING with us and took our needs into account asking us 'how we use our kithcen' as you automatically go to certain places to get things when you've lived there for years. The bin was taken into account at measuring stage aswell.

They don't design in the house but seeing the 3d images of your kitchen in the showroom is really quite something. It all clicks into place. There were a couple of changes we wanted to make but we told the designer and she made them while we were there and then priced our final design up, with 'our' choice of appliances and handles etc.

We chose to use Magnet to fit ours aswell so after we gave a deposit to hold the price, they sent a fitter out within 2weeks to check the designer's measurements and check electrics etc.
This is good as you meet the fitter before the kitchen is delivered.
Everything is then confirmed in terms of plan, appliances, kitchen style, worktops, handles etc to make sure you are getting exactly what you picked.

We received a letter in the post for the insurance (which covers your deposit and full payment if Magnet went bump) then a letter to say balance payment was 2weeks before delivery.

We also got a phonecall on the Fiday before the kitchen was delivered to say the approximate time for the following Monday!

(VERY EFFICIENT)
Kitchen arrived.... everything was checked off and the fitter ripped our old one out then started the fit the following day. From Monday to Friday the kitchen was complete.

There were 2 damages which were noticed during the week when the fitter unpacked the goods. These were reported to our designer who arranged for these to be replaced. They couldn't get these until the week after but the fitter returned the following week to fit the good ones.

When complete, we heard from our designer who wanted to come and do a 'Home Check'.
This is part of their service to make sure you are happy with everything and that the kitchen is complete.

I would recomment them to anyone!
Yes.... things did happen with damages etc... but all we did was contacted the branch and it was sorted out really quickly. We even got a phonecall updating us on the progress of the replacement products that were on order and to check the fit was going okay!

I love my Magnet kitchen!!
In case you are all wondering.... I went to Warrington Branch!
Total time for fit (completed after damaged parts replaced) was 9 days and from placing order to delivery was 4 weeks (could have got kitchen in 3 weeks but fitters were booked up!)

Unfortunately I had already ordered a kitchen through Magnet and paid a deposit before I did a search on them and customers reviews. If I had read all of the reviews that are out there about the company abd their level of service I would have looked elsewehere.

I was hopefull that they couldn't be as bad as all the reviews said but they are even worse. They have the cheek to demand payment in full 14 days before delivery (which was two hours late of course) and once they get your money they couldn't care less about your problems.

I am not going to go into length about my experience as I would just be losing more valuable time to them, all I would say is dont expect the sort if service you initially receive from your designer (not sure they have too many qualifications in design or anything else for that matter, they are well skilled in giving elaborate excuses as to why they dont do things or why they dont call you back however)once they have your money.

In short terrible after sales service, do not use them.

I notice that your kitchen was 20k, which is a lot. Given the experiences of other reviewers who have not been so lucky, it makes me wonder if Magnet put in more time, effort and their best fitters to the most expensive kitchen buys. I may be completely wrong, but my experience was so different to yours. It sounds like the branch you used should train up some of the other branches, and preferably have the fitter train others in customer service and fitting. Thanks for sharing your experience, it is good to hear the other side of the story too.

“Bought kitchen from Magnet Warrington. Biggest mistake...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Barry Bowers on 26/02/2010

Bought kitchen from Magnet Warrington. Biggest mistake ever. My builder collected from the branch. Loaded by Magent, everything ticked off by staff but not all items actually on van. Various cars turned up through out the day from various branches with the missing items as my builder and I spent the whole day trying to reconcile what we had with what was on inventory. This was at my cost as my builder was unable to start until he could complete this reconciliation. The branch was unable to supply an installation manual, which is absolutely vital not only for actual fitting but also for ensuring all components part were there, guess what? They weren't!
I paid Magnet over the counter rather than through my builder. I paid based on the estimate provided. When my builder received the invoice we compared the 2 and realised I had paid for 2 hobs and been invoiced for 1 an over charge of bearly £400 plus I hade paid for delivery even though my builder collected, another £40.
Upon installation the storage cupboard in my utility was too big to fit the top box above it. This was all measured by the designer. Then it turned out the hob they delivered was the wrong one! The housing for the hob was the wrong one (discovered after it was fitted) the correct one was sourced that day then a second one turned up and is still sat in my back garden!
2 weeks after installation, just before Xmas '09, we realised that one of the work surfaces was substandard compared to the others. Magnet, after 2 weeks of "mithering" sent a fitter to look at the work surface. He agreed the surface was faulty and would report to the branch. Nobody came back to me so again after 3 weeks the acting manager of the branch also came out and again agreed with me that the surface was faulty. He went to speak to the area manager who despite never seeing the work surface or speaking to me said it was not Magnets responsibility but as an act of "good will" would replace the surface but not pay to fit it as we should have spotted the faulty surface before installation! It didn't look faulty then otherwise I wouldn't have had it fitted!
I could go on for ages, probably already have!

Take my advice DO NOT BUY YOUR KITCHEN FROM THESE PEOPLE.
