“Great while it lasted! Rubbish after care when it failed!”

★★☆☆☆

written by janesteffal6 on 20/02/2015

Brilliant iron (Tefal compact express) whilst it worked. It worked for about 14 months so was out of warranty when it failed.(iron plate heated, green steam light started flashing, and no steam was generated. The steam cable felt cold. The generator seemed to be not working at all). Tefal offered to collect and fix for a minimum of £65. A local electrical repairer offered the same service for £50. I declined both thinking I would be better off just buying another cheaper iron- but decided I had nothing to lose by trying the white wine vinegar/water descaling option. I poured around a pint of vinegar/water into the anti calc cavity. Left it for 2 hours then switched the iron on. I was amazed..... the generator tank started to make noises and the iron started to drip brown water. I switched on the steam button and it went beserk!! Hey presto.... lots of steam. The green steam button that previously would not stop flashing, stopped flashing! Now my iron is fixed! I just need to run more water through to clear any vinegar smell, that other people seemed concerned with, but the smell of vinegar isnt that strong! Amazing! Why couldnt Tefal suggest this????? February 2015!

“Tefal Steam Irons are Amazing!”

★★★★★

written by on 15/10/2014

We have had our Tefal Steam Iron for 2 years and it is without a doubt....amazing!. I have four children, so along with my husband and I (6) in the family, the iron is used 7 days per week non stop. I did hear that calcium builds up, however every iron I have ever owned does this. You just need to use distilled water. What a great product. If you don't have a Tefal steam iron you seriously are missing out on the most amazing product. I hated ironing until we bought this. Quick, easy and amazing results on clothes. It is worth the money, they are really effective. I just bought a new one today so I could get a bigger water compartment and a newer model.

This iron looks good and worked fine for a year and then it started tripping out our electrical circuit. I have learned that this is a common with no quick or cheap fix. Waste of money

“Steer clear!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/12/2012

I felt compelled to warn you away from purchasing this iron as like many others our 'Tefal pro-express' started to spit out brown stained water yesterday and tripped our electric circuit. I thought I'd give it a thorough clean before trying again, sadly to no avail - once again it started to spit out brown stained water and tripped the electric circuit. I bought the iron 18 months ago; unfortunately it is out of the 12 months warranty period. Reading the other reviews, it is clear that this is a common fault. NOT GOOD ENOUGH FROM A WELL KNOW BRAND!

“design flaw”

★☆☆☆☆

written by GMMS on 14/09/2012

15 mths ago I purchased the Tefal Steam generator iron model GV8461 and within the past month the lead has come off the reel which is incased within the stand. So I am not able to get the lead to extend out of the iron base. It is outside the 12 mth warranty so neither Tefal or the retailer want to know. The iron retails at £200 and Tefal offer was to get me to purchase another iron at a reduced price of £167.99 or send the faulty one off for repair with minimum charge of £64. It is day light robbery. It is a design fault within the iron. Tefal should respect that customers want value for money and exchange a iron that they produced that has a design fault. Be warn do not purchase

“Great iron”

★★★★☆

written by on 23/02/2012

I have had this iron for nearly a year. Periodically I did have problems with brown staining on light clothing even though I was following the instructions. Recently it has got much worse to I contacted Tefal to ask them how to fix this and this is the reply they sent back the following day: Thank you for your email regarding the above product. In order to keep your steam generator in peak condition, it is important to de-scale it regularly. In hard water areas, this procedure needs to be carried out more often. In order to do this, remove the ani-scale collector from the side of the generator unit and rinse. If the scale collected does not come away completely, soak the collector in lemon juice or white spirit vinegar overnight. If the water in your area is especially hard, repeat this procedure every 3 or so uses to keep on top of the scale. On a less regular basis, when the scale collector is removed, fill the boiler tank with approximately 1/2 litre of water, replace the scale collector, shake the generator and pour the water out. Repeat this procedure until the water runs away clear. To finish the process, replace the scale collector, fill the water tank up as if to do a load of ironing, and run through an entire tank of water ironing, for example, a tea towel. To remove scale on the soleplate, dip a cotton bud in either lemon juice or white spirit vinegar, and wipe around the holes. This should improve the performance of your steam generator. If you still find you are experiencing problems, it may need a repair. To organise this, you can contact our authorised repair agents, Staffords, on 0845 758 1545. I have just cleaned using the above instructions and my iron is now working lovely. It's a shame they don't mention this in the instructions. Hope this helps anyone having the same problem.

“Disappointing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Rosalyn123 on 29/01/2012

I too have been plagued with this machine for no rhyme of reason spilling out dirty brown water which stains the clothes. Even paid 65 pounds for it to be overhauled a few months ago. In the meantime I purchased a Philipps generator which was half the price and so very much better. Quite shocked to read just how many people were experiencing the same fault - this surely must be ironed out (excuse the pun !) by the Tefal manufacturers.

My tefal is doing the same thing. Think I am going to write to Which and the trading standards. It is an extortionate price to pay for 1 year of grace and no way to clean it. It has just ruined a very expensive pair of cream pants! Not impressed at all!

Omg...I have the same problem too. I am on my third Tefal. First one lasted a couple of years, but recently purchased a Tefal Pro Express and within a couple of weeks, brown muck spraying the clothes. So took it back to Argos and swopped it for another Tefal Pro Express different model, more money, but the same thing is happening. Any recommendations for a good iron?

“Whata load of expensive rubbish( DO NOT BUY)”

written by bellybuster on 01/12/2011

I have had a Tefal Turbo Express Anti-Calc steam generated iron for the last 10 years and I have never ever had any problems with it infact I was so delighted I went out and bought another as the steam stopped working, however in the last 4 months I have had and returned 3 Tefal Express Turbos Anti Calc back to Argos as after 1 month they all started throwing brown water all over my garments, so I again had to wash again and again and again, later I will be returning my 3rd Tefal Express Turbo Anti Calc back to Argos but this time I would like my money back. I am almost sure that Tefal are getting them from abroad cheaper, but not being manufactured properly as for throwing brown water staining all your clothes must be manufacturers fault. My advice DO NOT BUY. then you wont be dissapointed. Utter garbage.

“Bosch steam generating iron Sensixx B25L”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/09/2011

I have now had 4 Bosch steam generator irons that have splurted out brown water. I wonder if other people have had the same experience. It really isn't good enough that these expensive machines do this. I now keep the box and send them back when they do it and get a replacement, but that is a real hassle and what I really want is an iron that doesn't do it.... any ideas? Surely they can't go on manufacturing such a bad item of essential equipment. I certainly wouldn't have bought it if I'd know it did this

I have had 3 tefal pro express irons and have had the same problems they al seem to last about 18 months before the problems start... main one being the the steam button. The first and second one just failed and the third one just steamed constantly. A very expensive iron and very dissapointed. All bought from Cost-co but out of guarantee and just not worth spending the money on expensive repairs

I totally agree, I too have had three tefal steam generators that have not lasted more than 18 months. They are very expensive to replace each time. I have now bought a philips steam iron at a quater of the cost. If this lasts me a year then I will have saved some money.

“I HAVE HAD 4 TEFAL STEAM GENERATORS ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RITABOWMAN on 28/11/2010

I HAVE HAD 4 TEFAL STEAM GENERATORS
OVER THE PAST 6 YEARS!! EACH ONE LASTED JUST OVER A YEAR. THEY ALL ENDED THE SAME WAY, WITH WATER RUNNING DOWN THE SOLE PLATE STAINING CLOTHES. THE IRONS WERE ALL DIFFERENT MODELS, BUT ALL SUFFERED THE SAME FATE. THE FIRST 3 WERE BOUGHT FROM COSTCO AND WERE REFUNDED WITHOUT ANY QUESTIONS, HOWEVER THEY HAVE STOPPED SELLING THEM SO I BOUGHT ANOTHER FROM HOME AND COOK AND AFTER 13 MONTHS THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURED. I PHONED AND COMPLAINED AND WAS INITIALLY TOLD THAT IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND MY ONLY CHOICE WAS TO PAY FOR A REPAIR (£70!!!). I KICKED UP A FUSS AND EVENTUALLY THEY AGREED TO REPAIR FOR FREE. MY IRON WAS COLLECTED 5 WEEKS AGO AND I AM STILL WAITING FOR IT TO BE REPAIRED. WHEN I CHASE IT UP THEY KEEP TELLING ME THE PARTS ARE ON ORDER FROM THE FACTORY IN FRANCE AND THEY DON'T KNOW HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE!!! I STRONGLY ADVISE ANYONE THINKING OF PURCHASING A TEFAL STEAM GENERATOR TO THINK AGAIN. IT PROBABLY WON'T LAST!!

second Tefal steam generator, I thought maybe first not lasting long was a one off so bought another. I have the same problems as others with brown stains on clothing which meant lots more washing. After 10 weeks it started leaking heavily and tripping the electric. The company I bought it from (electrical shopping.com) only offer a repair which I think is very poor. I have had a real problem finding a suitable box to return it then all of the inconvenience of having to return it. They use a small electrical company to repair rather than the manufacture which is also a worry. My finish with Tefal

written by chuberoos on 30/09/2010

Oh yes nice and easy to use but not so good at leaving clothes without stains. I was so impressed when i first got this iron untill 3 months later when it started leaving brown stains on my washing. I'ts made my job twice as hard especially having to re-wash my husbands white shirts for work. Everytime i use it i have to flush it out and steam on a white cloth to make sure it does'nt leave any brown stains. This takes time and effort the former of which i have very liitle. I do not reccomend this iron to anyone. I would have been nice for tefal to warn me of this before i bought the thing.

written by on 21/06/2010

I have owned my Tefal Express generator iron for about 18 months and although I was very impressed when I first bought it and it made ironing a dream I am now very disallusioned. It would appear that the button under the handle of my iron has stopped working and now the iron constantly steams out of control. Also if I am not careful it will spit brown water over everything usually white washing!!. I have tried in vain to find someone who is prepared to look at my iron to see if it can be fixed but it would appear that you have no choice but to go back to Tefal and then onto their named repair specialist, who I would like to point out charges an arm and a leg before they even put the problem right. I only wish I had read this site before purchasing my iron because although I think these generator irons are the best in irons and anyone who does not like ironing (like me) should definitely invest in one. DO NOT BUY A TEFAL EVEN IF THEY ARE ROCK BOTTON PRICES IN A SALE - THEY ARE COMPLETE RUBBISH.

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/06/2010

This is the fourth Tefal generator that I have owned over the past 8 years. I had thought that I was just tough with my usage but after this one started to spit out brown water after just 8 months I began to think differently (takes time I know). Even after clearing the descaler it continually showed as needing to be cleaned and the brown marks continued. Then steam started escaping from the generator base and upon closer inspection I found a crack in the unit. What really finishes this off is that the guarantee ran out on the 12 June - 8 days ago as it only offered 1 years coverage and customer services have advised they are not able to do anything unless I agree to pay for a repair. If you have these problems - don't leave it until it is too late.

“After ANOTHER lot of brown water over the clothes I...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/06/2010

After ANOTHER lot of brown water over the clothes I was ironing, from my Tefal Pro EXpress Steam Generator,in desperation,I telephoned Tefal Customer Relations,I was told I was using the wrong water, as I was in a hard water area, I should be using half tapwater and half distilled water, this was in the instructions for my model,(not in my book of instructions), on checking the instructions while I waited, she couldn't find them either. I should also be cleaning the iron every 10 uses, I pointed out that I have to clean it every time I use it but it still sends out brown water. The only solution Tefal Customer Relations had to offer, was to send the iron to Birmingham, (the only repair centre in the U.K.) for repair, posting costs and repair all at my expense. I said that in all of the reviews on the internet (I wish I had read them before purchase) BROWN WATER stains seems to be the problem. I was told TEFAL don't read reviews,I pointed out that perhaps they should, then they would not have so many unhappy customers. My call to them was a complete waste of time, no help to me at all, next stop Trading Standards, goods of unmerchantable quality. I hope Tefal read this review.

I found this review very helpful because...I am having the same problem with brown stains despite using the 'right water' and regular cleaning/flushing out. It has become unusable and I'm wondering whether to try and get it fixed or put it in the bin. Have had it about 18 months.

This seems a common problem that is easily fixed with a modicum of mechanical knowledge, the problem is a leaking safety relief valve which prevents proper steam being generated and causes water to pour from the base, sounds familiar then read on.Undo the small screw underneath you can get away with a small flat headed screwdriver if youre careful but the proper tool is a safety torx bit.Remove the base and you will see an aluminium cylinder and just to the side of it is the brass relief valve, now you may need a second pair of hands here, gently push down against the spring and remove the retaining circlip (carefully it may fly off and get lost or hit you in the eye!!!)then remove the spring top and spring and finally the lower insert, this is the bit that leaks, there is a rubber circle in the insert this will have a ring worn into it where steam has leaked, push this out and simply turn it over and reinsert it.All you have to do then is reassemble the relief valve and refit the circlip (careful etc,etc this is where a second pair of hands is invaluable)and simply refit the base. There you have it your iron is as good as new.
