“I have been a member for several years: it is true ...”

written by kedo on 10/11/2008

I have been a member for several years: it is true the staff are not interested in retaining their members and I am looking for another gym now.

One of the problems is that the staff spend more time talking to each other and their mates than regular clientele many of the staff exercise there when they aren't on duty - and there are always cliques talking of them standing around in the gym.

It's gone way down hill over the last 2 years.

agree regarding the staff standing about, i go to two greens gyms and you rarely see the staff in the cardio or weights rooms supervising or offering advise. I had to pay a PT to learn how to use the weights.

written by Glasgow82 on 26/10/2008

All of the comments raised above have been raised with the staff and gm of greens. I was told I would receive a response within a week and have been consequently unable to get in touch with the gm for 3 weeks now.

Having left something in a locker I was relieved to find that they had found it and logged it in their lost property book but when I arrived to collect my item, it could not be found. The receptionist was unbelievably rude and unhelpful in my opinion. I was informed that they have 5000 members and it would be impossible to keep track of all the lost property. This is strange considering when I joined I was told that there would never be more than 1200 members as the capacity was limited. They are still signing people up! (When will they stop!) Is this technically theft? I think it possibly is!

I am totally disappointed by the service offered by Greens and wonder why people still tolerate their incompetence! They are clearly only interested in boosting their already burgeoning ego's and making money at the expense to long standing members.

Basically I have no other comments to add except that after my partner decided to cancel her membership the best price they could offer me was £59 per month which was far too expensive for a gym especially with the faults listed above.

They also seem to have a bad habit of handing out free day passes to just about anyone and then you notice a full family of people standing about doing nothing near the equipment you want to use!!!!

I have been going to various clubs for many years and Greens Health and Fitness is the best club that I have attended. What I find that is outstanding is that staff are very polite and take time out to talk to you, and the club is always clean. Keep up the good work.

I had been a loyal customer for many years and the time came when I had to leave for various reasons. I asked what the procedure was and was told i had to let the club know in writing and give 30 days notice.

I did this at the end of May and cancelled my direct debit. I then received a letter the other day saying I hadn't cancelled my membership blah blah blah and that I owed them £47.

I phoned up and said that I had sent letter etc. and that I had a copy of it but they simply said the hadn't received and there was nothing they could do. How do I know they didn't throw the letter away just to get the extra £47?

I thought that the thousands of pounds and years of loyalty they had off me would count for something but no.

At the end of the day all they care about is your money like any other big company and don't be fooled otherwise.

My advise- join a small independent gym at half the monthly cost or better yet- buy a bike.

“I joined Greens Health and Fitness in Liverpool over a...”

★★★★☆

written by CarolineandStaff on 23/06/2008

I joined Greens Health and Fitness in Liverpool over a year ago with my fiance in the run up to our wedding. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and there is an extensive range of BTS classes which are led competently and with humour. We were both given a full induction and recommendations for our personalised workouts were made. It does cost £81 per month for my partner and I on the flexi-plan, but this is because we are in full time employment and therefore have to go at peak times. People have complained about the cost and I am aware that I am on the highest tariff, but that's the way it is, I pay more tax than other people and don't receive benefits as I don't have children, a disability nor am I a pensioner. Such is life in Britain, seems unfair to me to single out Greens as if they are the only organisation who work this way, the whole country works this way! It is still cheaper than David Lloyd who wanted to charge us £130 for the two of us per month and all I really miss is the outdoor swimming pool. I certainly don't miss the 'aerobics bunnies' who work out with full make up on and their Chanel sunglasses balanced on their heads! Use the gym regularly and you will get your moneys worth. Otherwise, run round a park for free and do press ups in your living room!

As a visitor and potential permanent member I was not treated properly. The staff were not professional including the manager who I had to ask to see. They failed to realise the importance of PR in a climate of financial challenges and stiff competition.

written by Estfna on 01/09/2007

I joined Greens on a flexible contract meaning I could cancel in a months notice. In this contract there was a 14-day full money back guarantee. I canceled my membership on the 14th-day with was the 27th. That was the end of it for me and I was told I would receive a cheque with my refund. 2 weeks later the cheque had not arrived and I was told I had canceled outside of the 14-day period, I went to Greens with my receipt of cancellation to prove I had canceled within the period and was told I would get a full refund. What is more they also debited my account on the 1st of the next month (which I have only just found out through my bank statement) although I had cancelled my membership 3 days previous and was told my account would not be debited. Another 2 weeks has passed since I was again promised a cheque, it has still not arrived and they are passing me about. I do not recommend Greens at all.

The new Physio-Therm sauna is fantastic for injury recovery, and the pool hall has a relaxing ambience. Excellent value for money compared to other gyms in the area. Great club and would recommend it to anyone looking to get fit or simply relax.

★★★★★

written by Keatsy on 28/09/2006

I have been a member at Greens Health and Fitness in Croydon now for 11 months and have found it to be the best health club I have ever joined. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, the equipment is modern and very infrequently out of action. Cleanliness always seems to be a high priority, especially in the changing areas and poolside. There is an excellent choice of classes and a very professional beauty and hair salon. What stands out though is their pricing. Compared to Esporta and Holmes Place, Greens is extremely good value for money. I will remain a member for a long time!

I can't help but think that the username 'keatsy' is actually is the general manager of the place, as it is derived of his last name?

Greens is OK if you want basic, and is good value for money although classes are often either full or cancelled when you want them. There is no longer a bar or restaurant which is very dissappointing as the food used to be fab.

“I joined Greens Health and Fitness on account of it...”

written by nikki1884 on 20/03/2006

I joined Greens Health and Fitness on account of it being easy to get to after work and that was the only reason. I find it quite unclean compared to some of the other gyms in Edinburgh and the machines frankly old and tatty. On first joining the gym you are made to purchase a swob to enter the gym and also to use the locker facilities this is £15. However, as well as the membership fees which are paid every month if you forget this swob you are made to pay to borrow one. With all the week membership offer that they have it is virtually impossible to get into any class that they are running. I waited 3 months to get an induction from the instructor and when I did manage to get one he told me to join the classes(which I can no longer get into!) I am now waiting for my membership to come to an end and escape the Greens hell!!

Newhorizon's Response to 234830_nikki1884's Review

I really feel sorry to hear your experience. I really think something needs to be done by the unreasonable contracts the Health & Leisure industry are forcing upon new members. I think any Club these days that can offer a contract "without a 12 month contract" is a winner in my eyes. Clubs that make you sign up for 1 year are only interested in one thing...(and its not health & fitness of their members!!) thats annual profits!! Thats why they can allow inductiosn after 3 months or weeks, quite frankly anything after 10 days of joining is a joke, all new members need inductions sorted ASAP, need to stay motivated and the Club needs to provide enough Classes for its members or create MORE Classes if existing ones are full by employing MORE Instructors to take the extra Classes (oh but that will cost the Club money, doh!) I've been to a number of so called commercial Clubs over the years and have made my mind up that if you really want to get fit and have dedicated staff or are really helpful -just go to local Leisure centre-they're huge, plenty of parking, Classes allow large numbers, just they lack some luxuries of power shoers and luxury changing rooms, I've joined another commercial gym to get a bit of that now and then but learnt my lesson well, its all the CEO annual profits, membership target and then they sell the Club! (eg. Next Generation Club SOLD to VIRGIN) no customer care at all!

written by jj1978 on 16/12/2005

I heard about Greens Health and Fitness club from friends of members, and they recommended I come along. I got a trial pass no problem (for free) when I phoned up.

Reception is nicely laid out, and the gym was busy but not overcrowded when I was there (Wednesday at 6.15pm).

Very helpful sales staff who gave me all the information but no pressure to join.

Lack of children's facilities is good for me, but anyone with families would find it restricting.

Overall, a nice gym, with good staff.

I recommend!

written by eggplant on 11/12/2005

I called Greens Health and Fitness and was told a 2-week guest pass costs 40 pounds. When I went there, the sales manager said that price only applies for friends of members. He wanted to charge me 150 pounds.

I asked if he'd honor their price quote. He snapped that they won't make enough money that way. I said I will write an internet review and surely they don't want bad PR. He accused me of threatening him.

They also closed their gym that day for constructions (only sauna was open) but didn't give enough notice to their members. I saw members walk in and get unpleasantly surprised.

I went down the street and found a different gym with great equipment and customer service that costs half as much.
