“Dishonest”

★★☆☆☆

written by MichaelG_UK on 18/09/2014

The price of rental was low via rentalcars.com. But collection was a nightmare. The queue was long, and each person took about 15 minutes to be processed, despite most being pre-booked and pre-paid! The reason being, the clerks were trying to up-sell in every way possible. When it was my turn, the assiatnt blithely added "excess insurance" to my pre-paid bill, which on its own was more than the rental amount I had paid. I told him I didn't want it, so he reluctantly took it off the bill. He then told me that Dollar would provide me with a Universal Toll Pass for the Orlando area for $100. Essential, he said, because almost all the highways are toll roads, and most of them are automatic only (no card or cash payments accepted). According to him, we'd spend far more than $100 on tolls in a 3 week visit, and that a single accidental skipping of an automatic toll booth was a $100 fine. Scary stuff! Well, I declined anyway, and in the event, our total toll expenses for the 3 weeks amounted to $6, paid in cash as required. The assistant was very miffed by now, and told me just to pay for the fuel and that he hoped I wasn't going to regret not taking Dollars' excellent value "extras". Pay for fuel? I arranged the rental on a full-to-full fuel basis. No, he said, it's an empty-to-empty deal. But don't worry, Dollar charge only $3.43/gal for the initial fill-up, which is actually much lower than most retail gas stations. So I took his word for it, and paid for a full tank. Later, I discovered that most gas stations were charging $3.14/gal... I blame the individual assistant for being downright deceitful about almost every aspect of the rental. But I suspect Dollar pay them on commission on the extras they sell, and thus encourage dishonesty, even if it's not actually company policy. Altogether it was rather sad that an otherwise promising transaction was soured by a sense of being ripped off, even though I manage to avoid the most excessive pitfalls. Shame on you, Dollar.

“Worst car hire company ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 1962Welsh on 13/09/2014

I had a terrible experience at Miami Airport Dollars Car Rental Centre on 16/08/14. I had a non-refundable pre-booking for a convertible car ‘Chrysler Sebring Cabrio or Similar’ for the period 22:00 16/08 to 22:00 17/08. After I arrived the Dollar’s counter, I completed all the paper works and came down to collect the car. To my surprised, I was told by Collection Unit’s staff that all their convertible cars had been rented out on the day and there was no one for me. How could this happen??? I had ended up to rent a convertible car Chrysler Sebring Cabrio from Advantage, the same car and the same period but circa $25 more. I returned to Dollars counter and asked for an explanation why this happened and requested Dollars to compensate the price difference due to the inconvenience the company had caused me. The front desk staff checked with the Operation Manager in her office and I heard that she said to the staff ' I do not care who is…’. My request was rejected and no explanation was given. The staff said the only thing he could help was to refund the payment I made. Of course, the company has to refund me because the company essentially breached the hiring contract and did not provide the car I had paid and reserved. But up to today’s date, I have not received the refunds as the staff promised. What happened to me on the day was ridiculous. The way Dollars Miami Airport Centre staff handled this case was not professional at all, which seriously damaged the company’s brand.

“Newark airport awful service”

★★☆☆☆

written by Issac212 on 06/09/2014

Booked my car with my flight from London, Dollar was offered as part of the combination, I assumed they are a big organisation, however when I reached their reservation desk I had to wait an hour as there were others waiting in line and only 2 or 3 assistants dealing with customers who did not rush themselves. When it became my turn the girl was surly and uncommunicative being from a foreign land procedures are a little different and I struggled to understand what I needed to do with their electronic pad for example click agree on 9 pages then sign, next I happened to mention about sat nav (GPS as they call it) only to be told we haven't any left, ok so here I am arriving at a large strange airport with roads surrounding the place like spaghetti, so how do I manage ? on top of that the car they gave me was somewhat ancient with nearly 60,000 on the clock, in the end when I again protested they did finally 'find' the last remaining 'tablet' for which I had to pay $20 a day rental,I had no choice but to agree: The car had some warning light on from the moment I drove off, the following morning I discovered a flat caused by a large nail, I suspect this was the reason for the warning light being on, slow puncture perhaps, the tyre was promptly changed by roadside assistance who was excellent (some guy from Carbondale PA) the final 2 days of the car rental the expensive tablet started playing up so I ended up spending most of a morning trying to contact the tablet support desk who ended up having to send a text update to the device to enable it to work again, as by then I was preparing to drive back to Newark from Niagara Falls 450 miles but it was fine, UNTIL I reached the airport and then it played up again just as I was trying to find the P2 car park to return the car, which incidentally I could not see on any sign in the end I used my intuition and found the place. I then had the Spanish inquisition from the car return guy about the flat tyre who insisted I stand around in the hot sun explaining how I ended up with a flat and then filling in an incident report, that may be the norm but overall I would avoid Dollar in future, I ve always used Avis and found no problem ever with them.

“Love Field Dollar Rental Scam in Dallas, Texas”

★☆☆☆☆

written by vsparrow on 06/08/2014

Stay away from Dollar Rental in Love Field (Dallas, Texas). I verbally declined insurance coverage. When my husband filled out the electronic form, all of the boxes were pre-checked to accept it. He only noticed that upon signing and immediately make the clerk aware that it was an accidental acceptance and we did NOT want insurance coverage. The clerk said he would have to submit a correction and began typing on his computer, but never sent the change. My husband's mistake was in not getting an immediate corrected receipt, thinking the change would show up on our Visa bill. It didn't matter how many letters I sent to Dollar. It didn't matter how many statements verifying what occurred that I sent by others in our party who heard the exchange. We were forced to pay the extra $267.00 for coverage we didn't want. Our ongoing relationship with Dollar is permanently over!

“Avoid at all cost”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/07/2014

I booked and paid for dollar rental car months in advance. At L.Vegas airport when I went to collect my rental car, I had to wait in a line for 3.5hours, and noticed there were only 2 staff dealing with customers. Dollar rent a car publishes that it is the cheapest, it is a myth, do not believe this. The CDW and other taxes were more expensive than the actual cost of the rental. The rental car had scratches and dents on the exterior, when I attempted to point this out, the staff was not interested. The car was dirty both inside and out, the pressure in one of the tyres was excessive, giving rise to audible warnings to the driver. There need to be some government led regulation and monitoring of rental car companies, many customers are suffering. I would read reviews of rental car companies before deciding.

“To long waiting”

★★☆☆☆

written by FamilienNielsen on 09/07/2014

“Worst company ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by grillo on 05/07/2014

Dollar at Frankfurt Airport. In a nutshell: they ignore the pre-paid voucher you have got in your hand (stating exactly what you are entitled to), treat you very badly, try to impose all sorts of extras on you... avoid like the plague. I have never experienced such bad service before

“Bait and Switch”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 1978Munoz on 25/06/2014

Dollar will never get my business again! We reserved a car for our once-a-year vacation trip. The reservation made no mention of car rental insurance. We thought we could charge it to our VISA and had a letter verifying our insurance coverage. We should have checked Dollar in Frankfurt, Germany where we picked up the car. Apparently they have DIFFERENT TERMS AND CONDITIONS. Come to find out, they would not accept VISA for insurance so our charges more than doubled. My spouse was also charged as an extra driver even though their website clearly states that spouses aren't charged. We should have walked away from the rental and gone to a different company. Lesson learned. I appealed the excessive charges to Dollar, to no avail. Their representative said he had no control over the German franchise, Buchbinder. What nonsense! Our reservation should have clearly stated the additional charges. No transparency--and poor customer service. They will never again get my hard earned dollars!

“Dollar Orlando Int Airport, Don't Do It!!!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Natashaa478 on 08/06/2014

We have had the unfortunate experience of this company twice! Once can be forgiven as a bad day but twice is unacceptable. The arrangements you make in the UK before you travel are just dismissed by these guys in Orlando, they will argue, manipulate and try and take as much money from you as they can. The vehicle we had reserved in the UK was not available when we got to orlando and we were told it was not their problem, we could take what they had available or nothing at all. They are all rude and basically could not care less. Don't let them ruin your next holiday like they have done to us, pay the little bit extra and avoid this company at all costs!!

“Good experience except for hard sell at airport.”

★★★★☆

written by on 03/06/2014

We pre-booked and paid for a mid-size SUV from Dollar for a 2 week Florida vacation in May 2014. Upon arrival, we experienced the usual half hour queue followed by the hard sell of unwanted extras at the rental desk. Having used Dollar before I was prepared for this. The sales guy started off friendly but as I declined each of the extras and had him remove the ones he'd added on 'automatically' without our consent he became quite aggressive. After about 10 mins of sticking to my guns I was on my way with no extras added! I was perfectly happy with the rest of the experience. Progressing to the garage to collect the car we were directed to a row of SUVs and were able to pick the one we wanted. Return was just as easy. We dropped the car at the airport garage where an employee checked the mileage etc. and printed off a final bill for $0.00 as expected. I'd use them again but wouldn't recommend them to anyone who couldn't stand up to their sales staff or didn't want such a confrontation after a long flight.

“After long line, no car when we got downstairs”

★★☆☆☆

written by Acadurdos on 29/05/2014

Arrived last night, May 28 around 11pm, 1am our time. Booked on expedia before checking ratings. Only gave 2 stars not one because the fellow that checked us in was helpful. The problem is when we got to the lot to get our car, they were out of cars! Three of us waiting. When we told the attendant we had a confirmed reservation, she said don't blame me, we told them upstairs we ran out of cars hours ago. Her solution, just sit here and wait until someone brings a car back, and we wash it! However she said no cars were scheduled back for a while. After a few choice words she gave us a bigger car, no charge. This company will not get my business again and I will let expedia know too.

“The Best Deal I've Found Out Of Termini”

★★★★★

written by DenzelLee183 on 24/05/2014

I rent frequently from Dollar, and since starting with this company nearly three years ago, I have never been less than completely satisfied with every aspect of the experience. All service people are friendly and helpful, and I always feel my commitment to them is valued. I have tried other rental companies in Termini but find myself always going back to Dollar. They get it right every time.

“Hawaii perfect”

★★★★☆

written by louisekenny on 12/05/2014

I rented cars from Dollar on 3 different Hawaiian Islands and everytbing ran like clockwork but then flew to L.A. and had a horrendous experience. 10 full Dollar buses drove past us outside Terminal 7 so we waited nearly an hour outside in sweltering humidity. Finally we got on a shuttle bus to the car collection building, the driver didnt apologise when we asked him about the delay but said there were over 60 people waiting for cars. He wasn't joking ....... we waited in line for over 2 hours to get to speak to anyone. There were only 5 staff visable despite about 20 check in desks! The Dollar members club desk had no customers most of that time but wouldnt deal with any of us. My advice ....... either don't use Dollar in LA or join their club first so you get priority treatment. Good Luck!

“Dollar? Don't bother.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by GeoM on 04/04/2014

I went to Las Vegas March 23 to 29 for Spring Break with my 10 year old. I rented a mid-size car and paid for it ahead of time on Expedia with a credit card. When I arrived at Las Vegas McCarran Airport to pick up the vehicle, the line-up took 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to the counter! They had 2-3 staff on duty. The other rental companies had greater staffing levels and mostly no line-ups. The other line ups that did exist were for 3 or 4 people and were cleared quickly. Here I just started my vacation, never been to Las Vegas, and it was a brutal intro. They brought another 2 staffers once the crowd started grumbling. One lady had enough and let them know it. The staff at the counter were rude and could not care less. The lady I had did not have a name tag on, and claimed she was unsure ' where the communication breakdown occurred'. I was astounded. I was asking for clarification on what their optional insurance coverage included and what I had covered thru other means. She was exasperated that I could not easily grasp her terse explanation, as I was not familiar with the terms, and put no effort into helping me figure it out. I have never been treated like that anywhere. Upon going to the garage to get my mid-size, the garage staff told me there were no more mid-size cars. They stated they could not understand, and evidently could not care, why the office staff kept sending customers down there for cars they did not have. So after another interminable wait, the garage staff gave me a Jeep SUV with no paperwork instead, and said not to worry. Which of course I did. Will not use them again, and will advise against it for friends.

“What a rip off!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 23/03/2014

DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, COLORADO -- We rented a mid-size SUV through Priceline.com for our trip to Denver. When we arrived at the rental car office we had to wait in line for 45 minutes before being served. When we finally got served we were pressured to get an SUV 4 wheel drive instead of our original reservation, at 3 times the original quoted price. The agent told us that the mid-size SUV we reserved had no 4 wheel drive and that the police may not permit us to drive up to Breckenridge without a four-wheel drive in the mountain . Just before packing our gear in the car, we noticed that the car delivered just before ours, to another family, was a mid-size SUV 4 wheel drive exactly as we should have got. I asked the driver how much he paid and when did he reserve and he paid $300 or $1,200 less despite booking on-line at the same time as us. Worse still, the attendant told us that over 3/4 of their fleet of mid-sized SUVs was 4 wheel-drive. The staff does hard sell, trying to make you change your original reservation so they can actually make more money!!!! Never again.

“DISCUSTING CUSTOMER SERVICE REP AT DOLLAR RENTAL COUNTER.”

★★☆☆☆

written by TimothyReynolds on 24/02/2014

Arrived at the Dollar Rental counter 8:50pm for a 9pm pickup. The young lady asked if I wanted to upgrade to a mid-size Ford Fusion for $10 more. I waited a few minutes then she had me start initialing the counter terminal. The total due was over $145 more on top of he prepaid rental fee. When I saw this she told me that to cancel this upgrade it would take 30 minutes and to go wait in the chairs. then asked her for our prepaid car and we would be on our way (now 9:30pm). She said that she had given away our car and offered us a Chrysler 7 passenger van with balding front tires. When I informed her that this FWD van had balding tires she disagreed with me. I informed her that the wear bars were even with the tread making then at the minimum (2/32nd). She then gave me keys to a jeep that we couldn't find. Upon returning to the counter (10:15pm) she handed me the keys to a newer Mazda 2. After finding it I noted that the rear window wiper was inoperative. I returned to the counter to advise but she had packed up and left. Upon returning the car before 9pm there was nobody at the counter. Her condescending/rude attitude was the worst I have ever experienced. I am the Director of Security at William Penn University and a retired disabled Police Sergeant with 28 years of public service. I am partially handicapped with a bad right knee and a weak heart. The several trips to the parking lot and back was very distressful and exhausting. I will NEVER rent rom DOLLAR rental car again!!! Respectfully submitted, Timothy J. Reynolds

WE had a booking through Argus Car Hire. Once we arrived it took us over 1 hour to get paper work ready. Then when we come to collect chains they did not had in stock and was offered old broken onces. Marks on car were not highlighted were excess deposit 1200euros. On return we filled fuel tanks full. However compnay still charged us with refilling cost.Basically rip off. Would advise use in the future proper companys like Avis Hertz.

“VERY SIMPLY - THEFT”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/02/2014

We have booked a car hire while holidaying around North Carolina for several years and in most of those years Kayak has pointed us towards Dollar at Charlotte Aiport. Last summer despite us having a 'no excess policy' and despite twice clearly stating we wanted ' no extras' we were duped into signed a document which lead to almost $1000 of extras being added to the basic and agreed cost. After 6 months of challenging this via Mastercard we have now lost our appeal. Please beware when booking as on this occasion Dollar have succeeded in stealing from repeat customers. Never again!
