“Avis car rental in Croatia”

★☆☆☆☆

written by wfKirkland95 on 24/09/2016

I rented a car from Avis in Croatia. What an experience! They gave me a Chevrolet Aveo with 119000 kms, with the body damaged at different places and the right wheel making huge noise when turning on the right. Two minutes afer we left, the GPS was not working any more, so we went back to the car rental office to have it changed. They did not have any other GPS available, so I did not get a replacement. Useless to say it is not obvious during two weeks to find its own way in a country like Croatia where they speak their own language. A few days later, we almost killed ourselves while driving the car on a wet surface during a rainy day. I found out that the tires were completed worn and consequently were not sticking to the road when it was wet. I took the car back to the rental office asking for a new car. They told me they did not have other cars available. They told me to be careful and adapt my driving to the road conditions.

“Dishonest and Devious”

written by Ndorey on 08/09/2016

The car provided was fine - but thats the only good news. We were quoted just over AUD1000 for the hire. When we came to drop off at Hobart Airport we were presented with an invoice for over AUD1500! After lengthy discussion it was revealed that the operative at Devonport had sugned us up for extra insurances without any discussion or agreement. Reluctantly, the Avis staff reduced the cost by 200 dollars but this stil left us 300 dollars out of pocket. We even spoke to the Devonport operative on the phone at the Avis desk at the airport. She lied and said the extra charges had been fully discussed with us and agreed to at pick up. We sent our complaint in detail to Avis. It took almost 4 weeks to get a reply, and then only from the Marketing Department who were clearly only concerned about reputational damage that might be caused by our negative post on their facebook page. We await a response and resolution, but are not optimistic. You would expect an expensive and reputable company to give good service. In reality,im Australia,we have received much better service from companies such ad APEX at a much lower cost.

“Florida car hire”

★★★★★

written by on 05/09/2016

I picked my car up at Tampa airport. I had zero excess built in with my BA package but this doesn't cover glass, mirrors, tyres or keys so I had emailed in advance & was told I could purchase it at the desk for $6.99 per day which I did. They explained that I could use the built-in sunpass toll reader thing or turn it off & do toll by plate, they both cost $4 per day once you go through your first toll but it tops out at $20 maximum for up to a month of use. The car was a group larger than I booked, it was a Ford Expedition with 32k on the clock. It was clean & in good condition. Unfortunately once it was up to 65mph it started vibrating through the whole car. Not ideal as that's pretty much the cruising speed on the freeway. I rang the Avis breakdown line & as I was now in Orlando they said it was best if I went to Orlando airport to change the car. This was done & I asked if they had a Chevrolet Tahoe which was what I had hoped for in the first place. They said yes no problem & I got a top of the range LTZ model with all the kit, rear DVD player, sat nav, air conditioned seats & much more. It had a nice 5.3 V8 engine & at around $2.20 per gallon it wasn't that expensive to run (16 - 23mpg) I did 2,000 miles in the 2 weeks & it was faultless. Returned the car & they checked it back in & did all the return paperwork on the spot & confirmed that they were happy with the full tank of fuel & that it was in the same condition as when I received it. This next bit is just for info only & I hope it helps others. They didn't ask to see a fuel receipt on return but be aware that at Tampa & Orlando airport there didn't seem to be any petrol stations on the airport & I had to go a couple of miles away to refuel, if I hadn't got sat nav then this could of been a real problem so please plan ahead. I enquired how dirty a car had to be before they charged an extra cleaning fee & she said it would need to be caked in inches of mud & that the inside would have to be inches deep in sand or full of fast food containers & she said it does happen & people do get charged. So do what I did & shake the car mats out when you do your final refueling & throw all the rubbish out of the car into the bin & avoid any additional costs. Overall a great experience & I would definitely use Avis in the US again.

“How do they survive in business?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 14Woods on 03/09/2016

A week after returning home Avis took the equivalent of an additional 42% out of my credit card on top of the original agreed fee. A range of explanations have been offered none of which are true or can be evidenced by them. It seems like they are just trying it on. Customer services give themselves 10 days to respond and then close down your query having failed to provide an explanation. So you have to start all over again. I will take it to the small claims court.

“Book Avis if you want to be ripped off”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/08/2016

I will not book with Avis ever again in my life. I paid for extra insurance via the Ryanair website to "give me peace of mind". When I picked up the car I was given an unreadable copy of the agreement and I asked what am I paying for - the answer was just fuel. No mention was made of £65 of damage waivers etc. When I got home I realised what I had been charged for. My complaints have got nowhere and Avis claim the products were explained to me which I know is a lie on their part. How many millions are Avis collecting from people for products they don't want or need. I effectively paid twice for the same protection. If they had been prepared to give some compensation I would have been satisfied. This is probably as large a mis-selling exercise as PPI.

“Beware Avis will cheat you!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by johnklinck on 11/08/2016

After many years of renting with Avis I arrived at the Omaha airport at 11:30 p.m. After walking the considerable distance to the preferred booth I found no one there. I then walked all the way back to the Avis counter to retrieve keys for the vehicle I had reserved. The lady at the counter reached into a box of keys and came up with a Jeep Patriot. Not what I had rented but as it was now midnight I would take whatever I could get. I then walked back to the lot where the cars were parked. My right leg has several pins and screws in it and give me considerable pain after sitting for extended periods on flights so this was not a pleasant time for me already. When I arrived at the vehicle it was dirty and smelled bad. It also had only ½ tank of gas and all other dash lights for AC, radio, cruise etc. did not work. As I was not up to walking all the way back to the counter I took the car. This was a big mistake. I was very upset initially but as the days went by I decided to be a nice guy so I brought the car back with a full tank anyway. When the Avis representative checked the car in a was standing waiting for a receipt and he looked at me and rudely said your done you can go and walked away. I had been waiting not only for a receipt but for him to ask as usual if there were any problems with the car. Again I decided to be nice and just leave and not confront him. Again a mistake. After a few days I received a notice that Avis was charging me $250.00 for smoking in the car. Initially I thought I would just contact customer service and explain the issue. Wrong again. The customer service person had no interest in hearing what I had to say. She just kept repeating I’m sorry but we are charging you the cleaning fee. Of course her tone of voice said she wasn’t sorry and that she really didn’t care. I will now be renting exclusively form Hertz as their gold booth was still open that night when I flew in. I am writing this as a warning to other people who travel and rent cars. Avis will cheat you and they have no interest in what their customers have to say.

“Long Wait at Marseiile Airport”

written by juMcKee421 on 11/08/2016

Booked through B.A.Car was what I booked and met my needs. The Avis Office is in a Portacabin near to Terminal 1.The inside is grubby and in the heat was unpleasant for customers and staff alike. It was 2 July-mid afternoon-and the unit was full of people.I had all my booking papers but there was no attempt to give people like me priority.Non bookers were given the same attention and it seemed gave the few staff on duty 5? a greater opportunity to cross sell.I had to queue almost 1hr 30mins and it took 10 mins to process me.Poorly organised and very frustrating.Be warned.

“Car hire Lanzarote”

★☆☆☆☆

written by PaulGrindle on 04/08/2016

Just a few words of caution. January of this year we hired a car in Lanzarote. There were no problems with the car or the initial service. Please be cautious re CDW. We did view the car on pick up and had to point out a number of minor scratches and dents on practically every panel, and to be fair the girl did record them all. Unfortunately for us on one of our trips out someone we think reversed into the car and created another minor dent. On returning to the UK we find the Avis have debited my account a charge of £500 for repairs. I did my own investigations with Hyundai and the cost of a complete new panel is in the region of 99 Euro. I leave you to decide on where the rest of the cost comes from

“Don't use Avis! Customer service nonexistent!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SrNin on 03/08/2016

We rented a Citroen at the Gard du Lyons in June 2016. The garage staff were unhelpful and the GPS functioned badly. The worst came after we returned to the US, and received a letter advising us that we were being charged 35 euros for a parking violation committed in a city we NEVER VISITED, and that our only recourse was to address it with the local authorities. Well, the reason for the error was evidently due to Avis having switched us from one car to another at the time of booking without changing the info in their system, but our messages to Avis seeking help were met with repeated insistence that we address it with the city which we NEVER VISITED. It was impossible to reach a human being at Avis, apparently the way they like it. NEVER AGAIN!

We booked a Calais(or similar) from Gold Coast Airport. When we arrived there was not one available and were given the small Jeep instead. I fail to see where the similarities are..One and SUV,one a sedan and absolutely no comparison with the features or comfort. The worst part is I have emailed approximately four times over 22 days asking for an explanation and how Avis classes the two vehicles as 'similar'and I am still waiting for a response. They obviously do not care about their customer or whether they delivered what was expected. Stay well clear of this company and look elsewhere!!!! Very poor service and follow up Avis(If you even bother to read what your customers are saying!!!)

“Ripped off”

★☆☆☆☆

written by aldercrow on 08/07/2016

Due to traffic delays, didn't have time to refuel the car before I dropped it off. So I was fully aware I`d be charged a fee. But 161 euros is just ripping me off. It wasn't even an empty tank when I returned the car, just about two thirds empty. Earlier on in my rental I`d` filled the car up from nearly empty for 46 euros. When I emailed them I got no reply, when I called them, they promised me they would email me an invoice, still waiting for that

“Check wheel trim”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 23/06/2016

Hired a car from Avis in Jersey. Refused their excess policy as we had our own. The Avis man walked round the car with us and said 'all clear no scratches or damage'. We did point out a few superficial scratches around the boot area but he dismissed these and said only deep scratches counted. On returning the car the same man pointed to the wheel trim on one wheel and said there was damage there which he would have to charge us for. (I wish i had taken a photo) The damage was a tiny nick no bigger than half a centimetre. For that we were charged £56.70. On the original inspection the wheel trims were not mentioned and we did not have any incidents with the car. Please check your wheel trims when hiring a car and point out any damage to the sales person.

“Malta Avis - deceitful and dishonest”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Lubelou on 05/06/2016

Wish I could give Avis a 0 as 1 star, is 1 star too many. Made to wait in the car park for rep for 30 + minutes. Car was not checked properly on handover to us and we subsequently missed existing damage due to it being 3am and the car front being obstructed. Rep was reluctant to install the car seat for our toddler and told us to read the instructions on the side of the seat which was impossible in a dark car park. Returned car undamaged and was told I'd scraped the front of it. Not the case at all. Rep on returning then said he'd not charge me 325€ if I gave him some money for a drink. Absolutely disgusting behaviour and sadly seems to be a common occurrence. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

“The worst experience Avis in Bergamo airport Italy”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Kaliv on 27/03/2016

The worst experience with Avis in Bergamo airport. The staff is rude and try to deceive the customer. We had made a reservation online and when we tried to pick up the car the employee was very rude an told us that they don’t accept debit american express card ( where they specifically write to their site that debit cards are accepted). Then she practically threw the paper on our face and told us she cannot possible give us car. We decided to go back and give my credit and modify the name in reservation to another employee who was more willing to help. Before printing she told me that the car cost 110 the contract she asked us if we need optional coverage and I told her no. Despite that she charged me 100 more extra charges without any information or explanation. I couldn’t imagine that my initial reservation from 110 would be turned int 258!! Without any information before or explanation.

“Supplied me with a non-road legal car.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by PhilipWood on 06/03/2016

Avis supplied me with a car in Paris that had different number plates on the front compared to the back. I only noticed this problem the day I gave the car back in Brive and I pointed it out to their staff at this time. Needless to say the "other" car with my other number plate incurred a parking ticket in Paris, whilst I and my hire car where in Dordogne. Avis have not responded to my request for assistance with the Paris police to confirm this matter nor refunded me the Euro35 they charged for forwarding on my details to the police. I have not heard anything from Avis and its now way past the 15days they give themselves to respond to customer service issues. Customer service in Nil.

“Avis tricked us and charged $800 extra!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/03/2016

The customer service of the Avis car rental on West Broadway Vancouver, BC Canada is horrible! Don't go there! The owner and manager hung up on me when we were resolving a price difference. When we booked our car through priceline, it was $500 and when we returned the car, they charged us $1400!! It's very dishonest of the shop and very unprofessional. Very bad experience and would like to warn others not to book/pick up via this location. They put on insurance when you said you don't need it and charge you $800 for it! They didn't have enough cars to provide the right size and nicely said it was an upgrade and gave us a big car. Wanted to swap and never had another available. This shop is horrible and dishonest, never go there for car rental!

I've done goldcar before and the totally stung me, not only did the take more money out of my account but my car broke down one week into a two week holiday and customer service was awful, I had to call break down then go with him for a hour joinery to pick up a new car at the airport a whole day wasted.

Hi, I've heard that Europcar are good, but I haven't used them myself. The last time I was in Spain I found a local company at the airport, superb service on a six or seven year old car, 60 euros for the week. No problems with damage issues because the car wasn't perfect.

Hi yes I have booked with Avis in Barcelona Airport I have also used Alamo that were very good, I personally wasn't asked to purchase extras and was told they expect to odd scrape and bump, just make sure you check over the car and mark on the sheet things they may have missed, in my experience I have not upgraded insurance and its been fine. I took a car back to Alamo with a big deep scratch down one side after a mad man in a truck cut me up and nothing was said they just marked on the sheet and didn't charge (might have been different if i had extra insurance to cover the cost). General driving in Barcelona can be a little mad at times but is the same in London but on the other side of the road.

Firstly, I would not go near this company, AVIS will try every trick in the book to cheat and overcharge you, then abuse your credit card after you have paid. It will take you months to recover the extras they attempt to steal from customers this way. After this, their arrogance won't stop because they'll think they are doing "YOU" a favour. My advice is to find another car rental company with a good reputation, that is certainly NOT AVIS.
Report this content 123ianmartin Written on: 19/06/2014
I haven't used Avis at Barcelona but I have for other main airports, I booked in advance and then I was also charged further on return straight out my bank account as it was a premium location!!!!! Also they said there was damage to the car which there was not and that cost another £188 straight out my account also, even although I paid for the extra insurance cover to zero the excess. I would never recommend anyone to use Avis. Customer services were only interested in having all details on an email to which they took 6 weeks to reply. AVOID IF YOU CAN.

Use Hertz. Avis will take your money given the slightest opportunity. Last summer they billed me £1,400 for a scratch on the car that they had previously told me would cost £384 to repair. I travel overseas frequently and have been using Hertz ever since with absolutely no problems.

Hi, I haven't used Avis at Barcelona. I won't use them again. Should you decide to do so, my advice is to be very clear about what they are selling you, and to insist on an English copy of the hire contract. Hope you have a great trip. Kind regards.

All the car hiring companies have lousy reputations. I think all the locations are franchises and the franchisees are doing their own thing - good or bad. I hired from AVIS in Italy twice in different locations and did not have any problems at all.

Don't use Avis I paid the extra full insurance and they froze my credit card, the terms and conditions are from the USA and they double dip, try a local rental like Centuora

I would only rent fro Avis using/through British Airways site or using their exec club members rate - BA will help you out with any problems incurred as they have close working relationship with top bods at Avis. Also useful to have your own excess insurance or use the one with a Natwest Black card account.

I am currently on holiday in Crete. Picked up my rental car at Heraklion airport. Paid in full in UK and then also added in UK the insurance for any scratches etc. When I picked the car up at the desk in the airport the Avis car rep told me the fuel gauge was faulty and it was full but only reading 3/4 full. He said you return it full. when filling the tank. Yesterday we saw the gauge went to full, so obviously it was not full when we collected the car. So if we return it 3/4 will we be charged the full tank? Also the rep marked on a sketch of the car 6 areas where there were scratches on the car. How did he know where the scratches were? We were inside the terminal when he told us. It was dark when we collected the car which was parked about 400 metres away. I have read so many horror stories about Avis on this website and am very concerned about returning the car at the airport after our holiday, and about charges made on my credit card. Any advice please? I will take a photo of the petrol gauge when it is full.

Hi jojo4444, I would suggest you return the car with a full tank of fuel. It's not worth the hassle of saving 20 EUROS only for them to add charges made to your credit card for not returning with a full tank. However, you can make this known to the rep when returning your car, add comments to your receipt (it'll be a booklet), demand a refund and have both you and the rep sign it. If you have the added insurance please bear in mind that "If the rental car is damaged, this will cover the cost of repairs. You will, however, have to pay a fixed amount towards the repair costs. This is known as the excess. This applies regardless of whether you were at fault." (from Avis website). Next time you rent a car, on receiving it you and the rep should inspect the vehicle and agree on any existing damages to the car before you sign it.
Report this content FlukePlay Written on: 06/05/2014
You need to cover all bases with as much evidence as possible when hiring cars. When I collected a car from Avis (London Heathrow) their car sketch simply said no damage/scratches reported but when I inspected the car (to be thorough) I noticed scratches on every single panel and highlighted as many as possible on the sketch. I also wrote a comment that every panel was scratched and that their comments were completely unjustified to be sure. I asked the handover rep to confirm this and he did. So they are trying it on wherever possible. Highly unlikely that the fuel gauge is faulty, especially with a newer model but follow the advice of Soi_L with regards to this.

never trust AVIS reps abroad. I had bad experience with AVIS rep at Faro, Portugal 2012. the fuel gauge was fault too. it never goes to full until I had the fuel overflow at the filling station when I returned. They also asked me to sign a contract without telling the hidden charge even though I told them that I had full insurance against excess.

I would agree with Soi L comments but just add that when you return to the UK you contact Avis car hire head office immediately and give them copies of all your paperwork and hopefully They will sort it out. I know it a pain and especially at night when you have arrived after a long flight but I always take photos on my mobile or ipad of the car's exterior when I pick it up and drop it off, especially if the car is scratched in any way.Enjoy your holiday.

Hi, I have found Avis to be one of the most unpleasant organisations to deal with. I suggest that you do fill the car up before you return it. Keep a copy of the receipt, and take a photo on your camera phone of the fuel gauge. I found that Avis held a charge on my debit card for the full amount of the hire for almost a month after the hire, even though I had paid in full in the UK. Check your balances and get straight on to them if this happens to you. Be careful to obtain the English copy of your paperwork. In Portugal, paperwork is issued in English and in Portuguese, and I was given the Portuguese copies which made life difficult later. Finally, never ever use Avis again. They try harder... To cheat you
